The chapters are based on empirical studies that evaluated the implementations and outcomes of major teacher reforms in the countries from various parts of the world: North and South America, Asia and Oceania, Europe, Middle East and Africa. The concluding chapter discusses the lessons learned from these empirical studies and provides recommendations for policymakers around the world who are attempting to improve teacher quality and student learning through teacher reforms.

During the Second World War, a b-17 tailgunner had a one-in-four chance of survival during his standard twenty-five-mission tour. Valor, Guts, and Luck is the story of Staff Sergeant Lowell "Slats" Slayton (1923–2013), who beat those odds.

An underprivileged kid from Fargo, North Dakota, Slayton was a high school senior the day the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Drawn to the glamour of the "wild blue yonder" made famous by newsreels, he joined the Army Air Force. Eventually he found himself on an unlucky thirteenth mission to the main fw-190 fighter-aircraft plant in Oschersleben, Germany. After being hit by a rocket, his plane left the protection of the formation and was immediately attacked by a swarm of fighter-aircraft, resulting in damage that forced a crash landing in Germany.

Slayton, though wounded, survived the crash landing and spent time in three hospitals and two pow camps and then endured a 300-plus mile trek from Poland to western Germany during one of the coldest winters on record. Through Slayton’s recollections, William L. Smallwood conveys the riveting tales of life in the Air Corps, aerial combat, and the horrific experiences of a prisoner of war. Through it all, Slayton’s valor, guts, and luck made it possible for him to enjoy a homecoming after the war.

Great read.

William Smallwood's writing style is like taking a comfortable slow walk all downhill. Starting with the crew's 13th mission that has the B17 hit by enemy fire and crash landing into German territory and moving back in time to set the stage for Slats's childhood memories, Smallwood takes the reader for a true WWII adventure good enough for any movie. Born and raised in Buffalo, I knew Slats, everyone did. More than a few times I saw Slats at the Buffalo Golf Course having a Saint Pauli Girl beer. I'd say "why you drinking German beer? Didn't you fight those guys in the war?" "Sure ' Slats would say, 'I even bombed their brewery in Bremen Germany. But they make great beer." I got a kick out of Slats and all the WWII veterans in Buffalo. I only knew the very short readers digest version of his ordeal. I always wanted to get the whole story of Slats being shot down, and making it back after being captured by the Germans. As I read the really hard parts, especially the Black March, I could not imagine myself surviving it. I never cease To be amazed by the stories of my dad's great generation. Slats Slayton was a great American and thanks to this book a lot of readers will get to know him.

Master biographer Bill Smallwood does it again. He brings us into the real life of Sergeant "Slats" Slayton, a tail gunner on a B-17 flying out of England in 1944 - missions, crash landing, capture, survival and escape. For WWII buffs or admirers of courage and determination.

A heartwarming story of a child that loved his country and grew up with all the values that we don't see a lot of the time these days.
The family hardly had food for the table as he was growing up so he and his siblings picked up any work they could find to help out. He and two of his brothers enlisted in the service during World War II, and the story tells of his trials of being shot down over Germany and held as a prisoner. Very interesting. A book that is hard to lay down.

Michael Halper developed The Cold Calling Equation from experience and knowledge gained during his years as a technology sales professional. As the founder and CEO of Launch Pad Solutions, LLC, a sales coaching and telesales outsourcing operation, he began to take all of the tactics and philosophies that he used to be successful and built them into a model and system that is simple to teach and easy to implement by a sales person of any level. It is Halper’s real world experience of working in the trenches making cold calls that he uses as a key asset while providing sales coaching and building sale training programs. Complementing his experience is a strong educational background including a master’s in management, a bachelor’s in marketing, and a graduate certificate in executive coaching. He is currently working on a master’s in organizational behavior at the University of Texas at Dallas.

A Must Read!

I have read many sales and cold calling books. All had some useful information. Although, there was always a lot of fluff and information that either was not helpful or did not really apply. What I like about this book is that it is pure tactics and techniques. It tells you exactly what you need to do and not do to improve your results. All of the tactics and tips are very realistic and practical to implement. You don't have to completely change what you do or who you are. I saw immediate results. Highly recommend.

Great book! There are many books on cold calling but this one is very straight forward and tells you exactly what you need to know. It is on cold calling but most of the concepts can actually also be used in selling when not on the phone. Easy to recommend this to anyone in sales.

Work smarter, not harder!

Personally, I feel the book overall should be a textbook in most marketing classes and must read material for sales personnel during training. The book breaks things down in a way anyone can understand while respecting the intelligence of the reader. You feel informed and not lectured to. The style uses clear everyday English and explains in a short and clear manner new sales terms. The most amazing thing about the book is that it emphasizes effective work over hard work. Too many sales books say that if you put in enough effort, you get success. Halper clearly explains why this attitude causes so many to fail in sales when simply doing the homework of screening and preparation can yield greater results than most conventional methods.

How to read this Great Novel

If I am not mistaken Absolom Absolom came out in 1936--the same year as Gone with the Wind. I am sttill waiting for the movie f the former. I agree with most readers reaction--greatness and difficulty. Let me just suggest that reading it out loud--perhaps with other people is a useful method of getting through the book--it worked for me (Joyce's Ulysses I think should be read out loud as well.)

This is a difficult book. Just a suggestion. But Absolom Absolom I believe is Faulkner's greatest novel and perhaps America's greatest Novel.

I found it useful to read Absolom Absolom along with Nate Shaw's (Ned Cobb) autobiography All God's Dangers-- or Hosea Hudson's autobiography. I found it enlightening to read Faulkner's masterful description of the South through White eyes against Cobb's and Hudson's view of the South from a Black perspective. Black or White the South has been the source of much of our greatest writing.

This novel met all of my expectations. William Faulkner was a masterful writer. It is not just the story he is telling, but how he is telling it. If one does not like to be challenged, then this is not the author or novel to read.

I found it a very difficult book to read with long sentences with brackets which made you get lost in the story, but...it's Faulkner and his deep prose is always worth reading.

I highly recommend The Diva and Doctor God. This book is beautifully written and intriguing. It captures the incredible life of Dr. Samuel Pozzi and his correspondences between the talented Sarah Bernhardt, Emile Zola, Charles Darwin and many others. It is clear that Pozzi was a great supporter of the arts and made significant contributions to women's health and medicine throughout his life. This book made a lasting impression on me and Pozzi will not be forgotten. It is a wonderful read.

This excellent book gives us a unique view into the relationship between Sarah Bernhardt and Samuel Pozzi through their correspondence. It avoids the prurient view of previous writing about the relationship and allows us a view of a lifelong friendship, transcending the earlier affair between the two. I would recommend this book to any serious Bernhardt scholar or scholar of the history of medicine.

Better than fiction.

It appears to me to be a really well researched, well constructed scholarly work which also reads like a good novel. The relationship between the two protagonists is totally believable, and moving. I also really liked the historical background including the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune, previously just names to me.
Highly recommended.

Mauser (Ludwig Maximilian Univ. of Munich) first discusses what it is about water--and its relationship to life--that makes it unique. Subsequent chapters focus on two areas where water usage has already caused severe environmental disruption (Aral Sea) or where the potential for international water conflicts is high (Nile River and its tributaries). The discussion on sustainable water use emphasizes the 1992 Dublin Statement on water, which emphasizes that it is a basic human right to have access to clean water and sanitation at an affordable price. Considering the depletion of surface and groundwater resources today in light of projected global population growth (9.5 billion by 2050), it is clear that providing water for individuals, agriculture, and industry will be one of humanity's biggest challenges for the future, requiring major improvements in water recycling and efficiency of use.
