Good reading, good examples

For a text, this is fairly interesting. It gives good examples and cases. It does seem to have a few places where it is either inaccurate or just not written clearly, but overall, this is one of the better texts I have had to purchase. It is also sprinkled with humor, which is great. Definitely a keeper.

Good but not Excellent!

I like the organize imformation provided in the book, but I found some mispelled words. The mispelling caused some confusion as to what the author was try to say, but eventually I began to get caught up to it and figured out. The term and the definition placed on the side of the page next to the related subject, was very helpful to understand the content of the material in the chapters. I also founded very helpful to have the full written Federal Rules of Evidence on the last pages of the book.

Option strategies for directionless markets

Before I purchased this book, I was looking for a text that would allow me to perfrom options trading in a practical manner i.e I was looking for clear description in what to look for prior to setting up trades, how to define the probability of stocks / indices hitting my target, entrance strategies, exit stratagies, rescue scenarios and soild money mangement techniques. I was also looking for examples of "real" trades that were performed. When I got the book my first impression was that it looked like and read like a school mathematics text book. There were lots of information but not much that could help me practically. The diagrams in the book are well drawn, but again they look like school book text with lots of theory. I do not think having questions at the end of every chapter were really that useful. However the chapters were well written and did provide some useful information for the novice option tarder

I think a better approach would have been to focus on three or four strategies and provide text showing how to apply these to trades starting from what to look for, probability set up, entrance and money management. Also it would have been useful to provide a chapter on how to get started, dealing with things such as virtual trading, potential brokers, charting etc.

I would have liked to see more information on guidelines to determine the best range (width) to buy (sell). Specifics on Condor corrections like when is the best time, how to determine how much correction, and alternatives. I would have liked to see ideas on "winging into condors" or adding one side at a time.

Should have included more

Excellent information on the different schools, however, previous editions for prior years have provided more info on students that apply and get accepted as far as grades, states they come from, etc. So I was a bit disappointed that this edition did not include any of this extra info as that is what I wanted it for.

I love this book, and it is nice and big to write in the margins, unlike previous editions. Although pre-vet students should do further research of schools they are interested in, this book is the best way to start narrowing down your school wish list!

Several algorithms are illustrated: the discrete Fourier transform, Shor's algorithm for prime factorization; algorithms for quantum logic gates; physical implementations of quantum logic gates in ion traps and in spin chains; the simplest schemes for quantum error correction; correction of errors caused by imperfect resonant pulses; correction of errors caused by the nonresonant actions of a pulse; and numerical simulations of dynamical behavior of the quantum Control-Not gate. An overview of some basic elements of computer science is presented, including the Turing machine, Boolean algebra, and logic gates. The required quantum ideas are explained.

Quantum computation broken down into digestible pieces

This 187-page 6"x8" paperback book takes on the difficult topic of quantum computation in a way that is accessible to a non-expert like myself. In 29 brief chapters (each averaging 6 pages) the authors present ideas in small enough pieces that the reader is not completely overwhelmed with mathematics and jargon. Still, I found it somewhat difficult to orient myself after first picking up this book.

In the end I relied on the approach that I generally adopt in studying new topics: that of finding the chapter that seemed the most interesting and reading it first. For me this was Chapter 4 "The Quantum Computer" (pp.20-30) in which two groups (i.e. registers) of quantum bits (i.e. qubits) are related by a digital Fourier transform. This approach, known as Shor's algorithm, is able to quickly extract the period of an periodic function (e.g. cosine) encoded into one of the series of qubits corresponding to a quantum register. This algorithm is also the foundation for code breaking that involves factoring a product into prime numbers.

Once I had studied Shor's algorithm, which I found quite exciting, I was sufficiently hooked to review the introductory chapters on Boolean algebra, and go on to read about circuit diagrams for such things as NAND gates. The authors also introduce the reader to physical systems, such as ion traps, that can be used as the building blocks for qubits and quantum logic gates.

This book is written at a level accessible to advanced college undergraduates majoring in science and engineering who have taken a junior level modern physics course that addresses the Schrodinger equation and its solutions. The reader also needs to be familiar with Dirac's bra-ket notation, which is used extensively throughout this book. The reader who has successfully absorbed The Feynman Lectures on Physics. Volume III: Quantum Mechanics would certainly have the proper background for understanding this book.

This book is written in fairly simple language is is not difficult to comprehend. On the other hand, it talks about very advanced technologies that use completely new medium of computer structure. It's just extremely interesting to read. If this technology will work in the future, becoming practical rather than theoretical, our world will never be the same.
