Weber (1864-1920) was a sociologist whose intellectual interests found voice in a series of noteworthy studies covering an extremely wide range of modern social science from economics, politics, and administration to the sociology of religion, law, authority, leadership, and knowledge. Not least among his fields of inquiry was that of music; the present volume, translated from the German, is important to sociologists and musicians. It was Weber's belief that social actions are stabilized through four types of action (rational, evaluative, emotional, and traditional) with the properties of the action being determined by the relation of means to ends. Music, as well as other fields of human action, is subject to these forces. Weber, in a tightly knit study, analyzes musical culture in terms of the rational and non-rational patterns it assumes. It is his thesis that the distinguishing feature which led to the development of Western music as contrasted with that of other cultures lies in its unusual development in this regional area of rational structural patterns. The properties of this musical rationality are examined, and the social and technical forces which played a role in its historical growth come under a closely reasoned scrutiny. The translators have provided a fifty-two page introduction summarizing his argument, together with copious references and editorial notes. 148 p. Lifers were taking over the low notes of social culture long before Max Weber

The best part of this book for me was about the wrath of metaphysical powers. Music in antiquity was based on instruments that had different tunings. Greeks and Romans were aware of tone intervals based upon the different length of strings that could be analyzed with the ratios of prime numbers like 2:3. The same tone an octave higher might not form the same ratio with a fourth or fifth as inverted chords would get overtones that were as bad as an augmented sixth.

Musicians who became familiar with happens to people who are drunk were not supposed to slip into the kind of harmonies that would violate strict pure tones of worship. Max Weber related the power of music to the social rituals of magic ceremonies that were supposed to influence gods or demons. Bad things could happen:

Since any deviation from a magical formula
once proved to be effective
destroys its potency,
in fact, such deviation can attract the wrath
of metaphysical powers.

The wrong rendition of a tone formula
was an offense which could only be
atoned by the instantaneous murder
of the offender.

Once canonized for any reason,
stereotyped tone intervals were
of extraordinary influence. (p. 40).

So much money for something that is too big and rather awkward. I really hoped it showed the referral areas and trigger points like the wall charts. The stretching is useful.

I just can't continue. (SPOILERS)

I gave this book 2 stars because it had such a nice beginning. It wasn't long before it became uncomfortable. To start, I could sense WAY too many similarities to the first book. Boy & girl meet. Boy & girl sense a connection. Girl tries to deny it. Outside interference from another girl. Danger rears it's head, etc. I could look past that, though. What I couldn't get past was the horrible and down right unlikable character that Stefan was.

He had absolutely NO redeeming qualities. Where in the first book, Liam was a bit abrasive and possesive, in this second book, Stefan bordered on physically and emotionally abusive. There was nothing even remotely dreamy or romantic about his treatment of Isabelle. He threatened her so often that it became hard to read. His behavior towards her family when she was injured killed the moment for me.

I understand you were trying to show us how intense the bond was, but I think you went a step too far. Then to have the family sort of laugh it off when they realised what was going on with him, even though he nearly killed Ethan was ridiculous. The moments after their first time together were destroyed by his abusive behavior and his holding her on the bed and squeezing her arms till she agreed never to leave him was beyond disgusting. His abusive behavior left me sickened and that was the moment I stopped reading this book.

I may come back to it or I may not. I am angry that, after reading the first and loving it, that I stupidly bought all the rest.

Wasn't a bad read

This book wasn't a bad read at all. I didn't feel it was a waste of $ like some other readers. I actually enjoyed hearing the rest of the characters story....our at least picking up some years after the last book. Sure there were spelling errors....did it detract from the story? ....not really, at least not for me.

I do wish the author could have picked more unique names for the characters, a few names kept reminding me of the twilight series. I also wish the words SPAT and RETORTED were used a little less frequently, for being happy, non killing vamps they sure had quite a bit of snarky-ness about them.

Overall, it was a good read.

Completely different from the first book

I really liked the first one. This one was like the Vampire Walton's with all the kids. Completely different! Just not at all appealing to me. I'm sure there's violence in the book, I just didn't get far enough into it to see any. I gave up a couple chapters in.

Alija's story is counterpointed by Milan Vilenjak's. He has been training all his life to exact revenge from Atif Tanovic, an Ustashi who single-handedly murdered Milan's entire family. But once Milan has the opportunity to end his enemy's life, he recoils, having discovered that Atif is a human being, a man who exists apart from his monsterous acts, a man who is troubled by his bad conscience. Tanovic, an avowed war criminal, is a repulsive villain who is to be prosecuted and punished, but Draskovic persuades us to sympathize with him. Who cannot admire the profound transformation that occurs when Atif argues against war and the slaughter of innocents? He embodies Draskovic's underlying theme: each act of revenge is a suicide.

Stunning novel

Vuk Draskovic, a gifted writer, eloquently reveals the emotional and mental anguish that comes with the gruesome violence in the Balkans over the centuries. Dismissed as too nationalistic by some, the novelist is stunning in his brilliant ability to make the reader feel the anguish and uncertainty of the characters. One comes away from the novel clearly seeing the cause of the Muslim/Christian conflict in the former Yugoslavia and the dangers of political polarization. A cautionary tale for these times of increasing political polarization in the United States.

An excellent overview of the situation of the Balkans

This book is about human tragedy, beliefs, pride, inat, history, religion, local culture, and foreign intervention and domination of a native population. It forces all Southern Slavs to look at themselves first as fellow Southern Slavs, and then to identify themselves by religion and politics. The novleist expresses it beautifully through dramatic incidents, which form a background to the present day political situation in the former Yugoslavia. The novel captivates the reader from beginning to the end. KNIFE tells us that history should not be concealed from the general public. Had the issues expressed in this novel been resolved immediately after World War II, the present Balkan situation would not have occurred. The media and US politicians could not have revised the history of the Southern Slavs. After all, Christianity, Islam, Fascism and Communism are foreign influences over which Southern Slavs fought, unfortunately with a knife.
