Scholarship + Spiritual Depth = Great Commentary

I have over 100 commentaries on the Gospel of John and none of them even comes close to this volume. Critical and exegetical issues are treated fully and fairly. Footnotes are jam-packed with excerpts from numerous authors holding differing viewpoints. Evaluations of other positions are peacable yet thorough. Morris brings out the richness of John's message on every page. I recently preached on John 1:1 and this commentary was eminently useful for understanding the background and meaning of the text. Massive conservative scholarship, a lucid and penetrating style, profound insight and, above all, spirtual depth make this volume a masterpiece! Morris is not the only commentator on I consult, but he is always the first and usually the most rewarding.

Thorough and Readable Commentary

Leon Morris, principal emeritus of Ridley College (Melbourne, Australia) and author of over forty books, masterfully comments on St. John's Gospel.

The two aspects of this commentary I most appreciate are the conservative nature of the commentary and its high readability. In this commentary, the reader will find no historical-criticism. Rather, the author has faith in the inerrancy of Scripture and treats this portion of Scripture accordingly. Happily, when difficulties arise between the Synoptic Gospels and the Gospel according to John, he acknowledges these difficulties, lists several possible ways in which they can be reconciled, then ends with a statement reminding the reading not to be unreasonably dogmatic about such a difficult thing. Morris' conservatism and respect for the text is refreshing. Morris also writes in a very readable, fluid style. I found myself reading the nearly 800 pages of text much quicker than I expected to, mainly because the narrative structure was captivating and a joy to read. Morris frequently ties John's writings to the other Gospels, the Old Testament, Jewish/Roman history, and the post-Ascension church. He also has helped my understanding of John by pointing out his unique writing style (double meanings, playing loose with quotes, fondness for numbers, time, and geography, etc.)

There were aspects of this book that I did find frustrating. The most frustrating for me was Morris' anti-sacramentarian treatment of John 6 and the account of blood and water flowing from Jesus wound. Morris argues that John 6 should be read primarily as Jesus "teaching about spiritual realities...but...there may be a secondary reference to the sacrament(313)." However, he spends the following pages arguing against each and every perceived reference to the sacrament. I have strong beliefs that Jesus teaches primarily about the sacrament in these verses--that is my bias and I would like it do be shared by Morris--but the fact that he promises to address the sacramental teachings of Christ,then argues against his own stated view! I have a similar problem with Morris' treatment of blood and water flowing from Jesus' post-death wound as he barely addresses the belief that it is some reference to Communion and Baptism. A second issue I have with this book is the poor copy editing. The final pages of this book especially have frequent misspellings, misplaced commas, and extra letters inserted within common words ("nthe").

Overall, the weaknesses of this book do not even come close to overcoming the many, many positive aspects. I feel as if my insight into the writing style and theology of John has greatly increased because of Morris' book. Furthermore, I am anxious to continue my studies of both John and the Synoptics as a result of Morris' work. Highly recommended.

Clear - useful - readable

Leon Morris commentary on the Gospel of John is a must have for anyone building a library of Biblical commentaries. I have taught through this gospel on several occasions and have collected many great works on John. However, I always find myself comming back to this commentary by Leon Morris. It is not the only commentary to have of this great book but it is one that will contribute to your insight and understanding of John's message and meaning. Other key Bible commentaires on John are the classic by Godet, Beasley-Murray in the Word Bible Commentary and Ridderbos' theological commentary on the gospel of John. If you are just beginning to build your library, start with Morris. He covers all the major issues, doesn't hide from difficult questions and fairly present alternative positions. As a supplement to this work pick up Leon Morris' "Reflictions on the Gospel of John". More devotional in nature, it was originally written to compliment his NIC commenatry on John. However, last I checked this work is out of print but it can still be found via Amazon's out of print service. Morris' commentary on John and the Reflections offer the reader a great one-two punch. Either work can stand alone. These works make great gifts for the Bible student or your pastor if he doesn't already have them. You won't be disappointed!! Enjoy!

About the Author

Dr Grace McCarthy is Associate Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Business, University of Wollongong,� New South Wales, �Australia. Grace developed the Master of Business Coaching at the University of Wollongong, combining inputs from industry with academic research and the requirements of professional associations. Launched in 2008, the course attracts experienced internal and external coaches, human resource and other professionals from around Australia, each passionate about coaching and seeking to enhance their skills and understand the theoretical underpinnings of their practice. Grace is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Evidence-Based Coaching and Mentoring and reviews for this and other journals and conferences. A pithy outline of Morin's theory of determination

This book is a reissue of the author's 1980 text on Morin's method. It appears to consist of her notes from a class she took on Morin, which was taught by the late Gerhard Houwing who had devoted himself to a study of Morin's Astrologia Gallica. The chapters are mainly lists of Morin's rules with nicely done graphics to illustrate planetary placements. The text is extremely pithy, and everything is packed into 110 pages - the entire length of the book. Overall, this is a useful volume for students of Morin, with some caveats.

What is lacking are the classroom discussions and explanations by the teacher. A newcomer to Morin may find this book hard to follow, since it consists of reading many terse rules and seeing very sketchy examples of how they are applied. There is no discussion of Morin's overall philosophy of astrology, that is, his ideas about why the planets and signs seem to have influence on earth.

In addition, some of the examples are confusing. For example, on page 50, example 10, there is a chart with Saturn ruling the 6th and 7th houses but posited in the 9th. The interpretation is "travel caused an illness" but the rule being illustrated is that the house a planet rules represents the cause and the house the planet occupies represents the effect. By this rule, Saturn ruling the 6th but lying in the 9th should be interpreted as "an illness causes travel."

On page 71 there is an example of one of the author's clients who allegedly has Jupiter in Aquarius, Saturn in Libra, Mercury in Taurus, and Venus in Gemini. This distribution looked odd to me so I looked in the ephemeris to see what else was going on in the chart. It turns out that this combination of planets never occurred in the 20th century, and so the sample chart must contain a typo, but which of the four planets is the typo? The chart does not match the client being described, and it is hard to know what conclusions to draw from an inaccurate chart about Morin's method.

The final section of the book offers the student 18 charts of notable persons for study. Only the charts are presented with no discussion of how Morin's methods apply. It would have been very useful had the author discussed those charts to illustrate the points she was trying to make.

Another important point is that unlike Morin, the author uses the modern planets and the Placidus system of house division. Morin had carefully studied house systems and concluded that the Regiomontanus system was the most reliable in his method. My own experience has been that changing from Regiomontanus to Placidus frequently changes intermediate house cusps and thus the determinations of the planets, which are key to Morin's method. I would advise students first learning Morin's method to stick to Regiomontanus houses and initially to use the traditional rulers rather than the modern planets till they get their feet wet in the waters of Morinus.

With the above caveats in mind, this is a good book to have on hand and will prove useful to those who wish to study Morin.

Excellent summary of some of Morin's methods

The few inaccurate details mentioned in the prior review are correct. How many books are perfect? Critical expertise means noticing such occasional slips. Of course if would have been quite useful to have a set of complete delineations of some nativities. But in order to master the methods we must do some work ourselves. The prior reviewer is quite correct in pointing out that Morin had studied various house systems and preferred the Regiomontanus system. Morin developed his own late in his career.

Nevertheless, the book would basically deserve 5+ stars. It reflects very well one of the salient qualities of Morin: to strive for coherence, clarity and cohesion. Morin was the last author to write a complete series of books explaining astrology from an Aristotelian paradigm. When he departs from this paradigm, not often and to keep within the framework of the official doctrines of the Christian Roman Catholic Church, Morin explicitly says so.

The format, printing, etc. of the book are excellent, beginning with a nice large typeface easy on the eyes. The sequence of the matters handled is logical and clear.

The erudite Dr. Jean-Baptiste Morin de Villefranche was and is one of the beacon-lights of astrology. This book explains how temporal mundane factors in a native's life flow from the birth map, often indicating which phase of life is concerned. The often encountered 20th century self-restriction of astrology to psychology had, fortunately, not yet occurred.

This book is definitely worth studying and perhaps will whet the appetite for more of Morin.

A classic that's still worth it.

It reminded me in many ways of 1984. This is a society that rigidly controls the lives of it citizens. In this society, there are no names, only numbers. Our hero is D-503, who should be happy, but after meeting I-330, a woman with old fashioned sex appeal, he begins to see the world a bit different. Relationships are controlled by the state, much like Brave New World.

We has in it many parts that will remind you of other stories but it was created in the early 1920s. Zamyatin came before Orwell or Huxley. It's worth reading on that basis alone. I found it fascinating to see what other authors did with the concepts Zamyatin put down first.

We is also worth reading for its own sake. The world and the characters are well drawn, and the story does flow, and almost a century after its creation it held my interest. Giving it 3 stars or 5 was a bit arbitrary, because We does show its age, but it is so influential, and while We shows its age, so does Hellen Mirren, you know? So, 4 stars seemed right. You might not agree with my 4 stars but I'm sure you'll find it worth your time to read.

Certainly I was not alone in wondering -- How can a book publisher not recognize the importance, on many levels, of crediting a work's translator, alive or dead? Anyway, there it is. G**gle books also has a 99c ebook, which includes not only the credit but also the 1924 and 1959 prefaces written by Zilboorg, should anyone be interested. The translation is decidedly less 'modern' than those of recent decades, which for some of us will greatly enhance the reading of this nigh century-old novel.

Written in 1924, still relevant today

An incredible novel not just for its time, as most great science fiction relies on ideas more than technology, but for its continuing relevance. It's a chilling vision of a society in which the reigning morality is a combination of Utilitarianism (a la John Stuart Mill) and absolute equality (a la socialism). While the plot involves these philosophies taken to an extreme, the moral arguments presented in defense of these extremes will be all too familiar. In the ongoing push/pull between the hive and the human, this book presents a warning of what happens when we subvert the individual in extreme ways in service of the "greater good".

At the end of each module is a review chapter which further enforces what has been previously explained. Teachers would definitely find this book supportive in administering in-class and homework assignments. The entertaining and instructive crossword puzzles concluding each chapter spice up and boost the word bank of the pupil, while keeping language learning stimulating and fun. An English-Spanish dictionary word resource functions as a ready reference for students composing and translating sentences. For learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs, the best product is the Verbarrator Version 1.1 (Windows Version) software. This piece of software actually replaces the boring Spanish verb conjugation books and makes learning how to conjugate Spanish verbs one of the most fun parts of learning Spanish. And, of course, the more you use the tool the quicker that you will learn how to conjugate Spanish verbs and reach fluency. It is one of the best investments that I have made here at Amazon.com in my learning-Spanish studies.

The last product that I recommend for anyone who is really serious about learning Spanish is The Ultimate Spanish Review and Practice w/CD-ROM (UItimate Review & Reference Series). This Spanish grammar book covers every aspect of Spanish grammar imaginable. To get the equivalent learning-Spanish value of this one book you would have to buy 3 or 4 books in the Practice Makes Perfect series.

This book is a great help for those of us who are language challenged. I went from being a very inexperienced spanish speaker to someone who can read and understand spanish text. As I learn more, I am getting a bit more willing to speak to native speakers and feel I am on my way to my goal of becoming bilingual. Great resource!

OK, but there are much better alternatives

Frankly, this book is neither here nor there - not a bad book per se, but there are other, much better, choices.
First of all, this is not introductory in the strict sense - you should be fairly good at C programming, but need not know data structures and algorithms. But it can be considered as an introduction to data structures and algorithms if you aren't a novice in C programming.
It is fairly light on maths and analysis of algorithm performance, which may or may not be a bad thing, depending on your requirements. I read the C version of the book, which was quite OK, but i've read much better books since, and the C++ seems to have been added on for market appeal - i feel one should be wary of books which claim to be in ' C and C++ ' ......... make up your mind !!
What i'd suggest is, if you're happy with pseudocode that you can adapt to your needs and don't care for a particular language, go for 'Introduction to algorithms' by Cormen,Leiserson & Rivest.
If you want code in C, go for Sedgewick's 'Algorithms in C' - arguably as good Cormen et al's book on concepts, and 'K & R' class code, ie C code that will remind you of Kernighan & Ritchie's classic C textbook.
However, if you want C++, then Sedgewick's C++ version or Mark Allen Weiss's book might be a good choice.
To be fair, this is a reasonably good book, with the explanations being reasonably clear, but the breadth & depth simply don't compete with the books mentioned above. After all, if you can get great books, why settle for anything less ?

Academic in nature and not for the beginning programmer

First off, my suggestion for this book would be as follows. For the computer science or electrical engineering students taking a data structures class to supplement lecture material. Don't get this book if you come from some other language, know your C at least. If you are a beginning C/C++ programmer that needs to learn data structures without having the benefit of an instructor I wouldn't recommend this book, try something less formal unless you love reading technical books.
The book covers a good amount of material and as the preface of the book states it is meant for a 2 semester course in data structures. The book covers stacks, recursion, queues, list, binary trees, sorting, searching, hashing, graphs, etc... All that is essential to becoming a well founded programmer. There are exercises at the end of each chapter to reinforce the material. The material presented is theoretical in nature not much C/C++ code but that's fine.
My opinion of this book has changed over the last year. I had to purchase the book for my first data structures class in college. After reading just the first chapter I was bewildered and confused! Most of the students agreed with me that it was a confusing book and without the benefit of an excellent instructor we'd surely would've been lost. I cannot stress this enough, unless you are very smart student this book should be a supplement to lecture material. I personally didn't read the chapters until after lecture and it usual for me read material before class.
But now a year after I first opened the book I find it a truly great reference. Certainly the book has grown on me and maybe later I'd probably give it a five. For example, recently I had to write a threaded example for my Windows programming class and I wanted to something time consuming yet simple that actually did something, so I just referred to the book on the fibonacci sequence using recursion and used that.
My final thoughts about this book are a bit strange. First off, this is the only data structures book I have read (so far) therefore my opinion lacks some perspective. At first I didn't like it but as time has passed I find that I really like the book. If you are a student going into a data structures class, most likely you'll be required to get a book on data structures and it's possible that you won't get assigned this book. But I would recommend it after you take the class. If you do get it for your class, don't sell it back to the school! You may just find it useful in the future.

Yes. It is not for beginners.

I find it annoying when a book is negatively dished because it is not understood. How can you give a review on something that you don't understand? Yes, go ahead and feel frustrated; but, consider that it might have alot to offer and that you are missing some fundamental knowledge/skills that the book assumes. I too found the book challenging, but instead of quitting at difficult points, I simply researched the topic online or in more elementary books. In all cases once the lightbulb when on in my head, I'd go back to this book and was able to follow along and greatly appreciate it.
I really liked this book because it is very detailed without being chatty, it uses a good combination of C code and pseudo-code, isn't mathematically challenging and has a great index.
I'd give it a 5 if it provided more C code, introduced new topics more gradually, and provided answers and code for the many exercises because some important implementations are left as exercises. I do however understand why there are no answers to the exercises and why more C code is not provided -- it's meant as textbook for a university course. Also, if you are looking for C++ implemenations (I wasn't) in this book then you'll be disappointed because C++ is rarely discussed.

Good visual resource

Basically a photo reference, with minimal technical information (though I did learn what the "new process" was, that the transmission company is named for).

However, it's a very good photo reference (B&W) indeed, with pictures of a lot of very obscure commercial vehicles (1930s armored cars, for example).
