Good, but not for me.
By William Mel
I have this book open as I am typing out this review.

It's good, but then again there's some missing pieces I wish it had.
Before I go ahead, let me say that student solution manuals are always, in tradition, odds only. The odds only aspect is not what I am referring too when I stated earlier "some missing pieces I wish it had" (implying I want evens too).

What I wish this solution manual had was the solutions to the proofs! I have a proof base professor, I'm not interested in these calculation base problems. My professor doesn't care if you can add two nxn matrices, he stated in class "that's not really interesting or valuable to me." So be it, he places a standard in class that I am not accustom too. Okay not big deal, it will just take time. I purchased this solution manual under the assumption it will help me out, and it does...to some extent...but not fully. I am however thankful for the fact that the T/F section has an answer and a 1 sentence explanation.
So recapping:
It does not explain the proofs
In the T/F sections, it does not give a proof as to why it is T or F, just one line sentence.
Steps are skipped, by skipped I mean JUMPED.

Another great reference from Amy Gillett
By silacin
The daily conversation examples are so common that you can easily find yourself in one of these situations and use the knowledge you recently gained from reading this book! If you're new to the USA, use this book as your daily dictionary. If you're a seasoned ESL speaker, then I urge you to challenge yourself, because you are likely to find more than a few examples in which you will catch yourself saying "oh, I didn't know that". It's a fun read, I highly recommend it.

I really love this book
By FLORIAN BALTAC
Speaking a language without using idioms and expressions is neither expressive nor full in meaning. Amy does a great job writing this book because it teaches us the idioms we need for daily life situations. Each lesson presents good stories and the associated idioms and expressions that go with them. Language lens is a grammar refresher and expression practice followed by quizzes all do a good job to practice what we learned. The audio CD that comes with the book helps the reader with the pronunciation and it can be played over and over again at reader's convenience.

Christian Identity in the Jewish and Graeco-Roman World, by Judith M. Lieu

'I am a Christian' is the confession of the martyrs of early Christian texts and, no doubt, of many others; but what did this confession mean, and how was early Christian identity constructed? This book is a highly original exploration of how a sense of being 'a Christian', or of 'Christian identity', was shaped within the setting of the Jewish and Graeco-Roman world. Contemporary discussions of identity provide the background to a careful study of early Christian texts from the first two centuries. Judith Lieu shows that there were similarities and differences in the ways Jews and others were thinking about themselves, and asks what made early Christianity distinctive.

Review
`Review from previous edition The book will, without a doubt, become a key one in the discussion of early Christian identity, but its rich exploration into Jewish identity makes it a serious contribution to that field as well ... Where Lieu's work often differs from much of the contemporary debate is the consistent clarity with which she sees the other side of the evdience ... This positive work will help focus much of the future debate.' BMCR

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Beautiful, Inspiring, Thought provoking!
By ae
It is a book written by a brilliant young man in his early twenties, almost a century ago, but is still up to date. As such, it has a refreshing and bold style. His objective is to put the process of reasoning into a scientific framework by organizing different methods with which one can improve his/her thinking efficacy.

He provides a new perspective on concentration by defining it as the process of persistently moving towards a well-defined objective rather than fixating one's thought on a static object. He also provides interesting discussions on debate/conversation, prejudice/uncertainty, reading and writing to help thinking. His list of further reading material in the last chapter of the book is of great value, even a century after it was written, which also indicates the long lasting value of this great piece of work.

This book is my primary travel companion, and it succeeds in provoking new thoughts almost every time I skim through it. Thus, I recommend it to all those who wish to make better use of the "human machine" :)

PS - Later on (53 years after its publication), Hazlitt has written of his thoughts on how to improve upon this book. An outline of these thoughts are presented in "The wisdom of Henry Hazlitt", pp 45-78, which is available online at [...]

Great Book
By Cuban007
Thinking As A Science has an excellent chapter on concentration. It also has some wonderful insights as to how we think and how we can improve our thinking. The downside of the book is that the beginning chapters are somewhat boring b/c they deal with methods of thinking that are very scientific. But once you reach the concentration chapter the book is great.

Very Useful
By Erez Davidi
Thinking as a Science by Henry Hazlitt, (who is mostly famous for the book Economics in One Lesson) was written when his was only 20 years old. Quite an impressive achievement.

Have you ever thought about how you should read a book and what is the best method in by which knowledge can be obtained from it? In Thinking as a Science, Hazlitt provides some great answers (and practical methods) exactly for such questions. The chapter "Thinking and Reading" is quite illuminating and highly recommended for the serious reader. Only this chapter is well worth the entire book.

Although, overall this book is far from being perfect, a few chapters in the book are worth the time and a lot of good thinking techniques can be obtained from them .As a follow-up, highly recommended reading is Elementary Lessons in Logic: Deductive and Inductive by William Stanley Jevons.

Albert Einstein: A Biography (Greenwood Biographies), by Alice Calaprice, Trevor Lipscombe

Albert Einstein remains one of most famous scientists in world history. His image is instantly recognizable by even the most scientifically uninformed person―for many people, Einstein personifies genius. But who was Einstein really? What was he like as a person? What did his science actually mean? This fresh biography of Albert Einstein provides students and general readers a concise, accessible introduction to the life and science of this revolutionary man. Underneath his genius, Einstein was an ordinary person, with human frailties and weaknesses, but also with charm, modesty, a wry sense of humor, and idiosyncrasies. Readers will understand why he was named the Person of the Century by Time magazine.

Albert Einstein: A Biography will cover the entire history of this brilliant physicist's life and career, including: his early education, during which he was an excellent student, contrary to what is commonly believed; Einstein's struggles to find an academic position, which led him to work as a clerk at the Swiss patent office during the same period he was formulating his most famous and revolutionary theories; his troubled marriages and family life; Einstein's rise to international fame, and his use of that fame to fight for world peace; and Einstein's major contributions to physics, explained in ways that can be understood by anyone who wishes a fuller understanding of his scientific theories. The book includes a bibliography of secondary works that are useful for further reading, and a timeline of important dates in the life of Einstein.

I am going to give "Albert Einstein a Biography" three out of five stars. The book was informative and interesting, but I felt that could have devolved a little deeper into Einstein's life.
The book was very good at talking about his scientific discoveries. Each of his major theories and accomplishments were reviewed in depth. Personally sometimes I felt like a little too much detail was involved when describing Einstein's theories. During these times I felt the book dragged a little bit.
Thankfully, the biography also covered how those discoveries were received by other scientists and the general public. Even genius needs a little help to be recognized. After Einstein's key 1905 papers were published there was "icy silence". Not until Max Planck wrote an article on relativity did the scientific community take some notice of Einstein. The general public was not far behind the scientific community. Soon Einstein because a star. Even in his older age when he had pretty much stopped making any new contributions, the public still treated him like a celebrity.
One of my favorite parts of the book was when several common myths were debunked about Einstein. For instance Einstein did not flunk any of his classes. I think the myth that Einstein was a poor student is tempting to believe but alas it holds no weight. Math specifically never posed a problem for Einstein. While not all of his teachers liked him he was a very good student and excelled in almost every subject.
Einstein's personal life was the highlight and the biggest downfall in this biography. Einstein may have been a great scientist but his personal life was a bit of a mess. He never met his first born little girl Lieserl. She died of scarlet fever as a toddler. His personal life is fascinating to read about but this book did not go into great depth on how Einstein felt about his own life. The book throws in a few personal statements but there are not many. If the book had used more opinions directly from Einstein, like from letters he had written I think the book would have carried more weight. Biographies do include the authors own personal opinions, but an attempt should be made to take as much away as possible directly from the individual being written about. I believe that is where this biography fell short.
Overall the book was a good read. I would recommend this book to people who want a quick over view about whom Einstein was and his accomplishments. If you are looking for an in-depth look at Einstein another biography would probably be a better choice.

The Incredible Life Story of ALbert Einstein
By MacKay
.This book gives a very thorough detail of Albert Einstein's life from his ideas amounting to his development of the General Theory of Relativity to his difficult family life and his disabilities as a child. It explains many interesting facts and disproves any common misconceptions about Einstein's life. Calaprice and Lipscombe are able to magnify important points in Einstein's life and captivate the reader just through these events. This book also goes into detail describing how Einstein developed each of his theories and explains the ideas that are included in many of them so that any person can comprehend his incredible ideas. This enables the reader to feel they are in Einstein's head exploring the almost inconceivable thoughts of this brilliant scientist. I am sure that both Calaprice and Lipscombe desired to recount Einstein's life because of his varying life status as he became one of the most famous scientists in world history. Einstein's compelling life story is reason enough to read this book. If you have not already become acquainted with Einstein and his discoveries, I would highly recommend that you take time and get informed by reading one of his biographies. Einstein had an incredible life that is thoroughly summed up in Albert Einstein: A Biography by Alice Calaprice and Trevor Lipscombe.

The Genius of Albert Einstein
By Jake B. Applegarth
Albert Einstein is one of the most brilliant minds that has ever lived here in this earth and is considered by most to be the most intelligent man to have ever lived. He has made so many great contributions to science and math that greatly affect the way that we view the universe today. In the book "Albert Einstein, a Biography" written by Alice Calaprice and Trevor Lipscombe, it gives us a greater insight not only at his life in the sciences and mathematics, but in his personal life as well. We can get inside the mind of one of the greatest geniuses of our times by reading this great attention grabber.
This book first begins with the earlier years of Albert's family and the difficulties that they faced growing up during difficult times in Munich. When young Albert was first going through school, his teaches didn't ever see the genius in him. They were concerned that he actually had difficulties learning and that he would never amount to much. It continues explaining his upbringing and his accomplishments during his incredible life where he was able to prove the Pythagorean Theorem by himself, explain molecular dimensions, and make significant contributions to end World War II with the finalization of the "Manhattan Project." During his "year of miracles," he published some of the most amazing scientific papers that truly showed his genius to the world and covered his molecular-kinetic heat theory as well as his special theory of relativity. Apart from all of his scholarly acts, he was a very amusing human being. To those that were close around him would tell of his heighten sense of humor and his great sarcasm that he possessed. He truly is an icon that many look to in order to create and invent the concepts and mechanisms we have in our modern world that make our lives so great.
This book is very well written and keeps you interested in learning about topics that at the first glance are difficult to understand, but the writers help all learn about this extraordinary man. The transitions throughout the book help make for an easy read and the book ends before you know it. Such a good book that it makes it difficult to put down. It receives five stars from me and I will recommend to those that have an interest not only in mathematics and the sciences, but how to explore this wonderful universe in which we live.

The World of Goods, by Mary Douglas, Baron Isherwood

This revised edition with new Introduction from a leading anthropologist and an economist is unique in being about consumption but not a sermon for consumers, nor a moan against consumerism. The World of Goods bridges the gap between what anthropologists know about why objects are desired and what economists say about the specialised topic called consumption behaviour. The economist treats the desire for objects as an individual urge grounded in psychology; according to the anthropologist it is for fulfilling social obligations and represents the distribution of goods as a symptom of the form of society. It is a totally different perspectice and raises issues that lie beyond economics.
The World of Goods asks new questions about why people save, why they spend, what they buy, and why they sometimes but not always make fine distinctions about quality. It is well-understood now that consumption goods communicate, create identity and establish relationships. But not so well-known that goods exclude as well as include, and that the pattern of their flow shows up the form of society. This book will be essential reading to students and lecturers in anthropology and economics.

Accounting for tastes
By Timothy M. Hall
In this book, a renowned structural anthropologist collaborates with an economist to propose an explanation for one of the great mysteries of economics: where do "preferences" come from? Much of neoclassical economics rests on the assumption that, once we know the basic desires and tastes for a given population, we can then understand how people make rational decisions about how to acquire them and how to allocate their resources. The actual preferences themselves, however, are a black box. Douglas & Isherwood tackle this problem, evaluating several theories of "rational" economic actors from cross-cultural and systems theoretical perspectives. Their answer is that many of these mysteries are not so mysterious after all: we have good reasons for valuing the things we value, and many of the apparently frivolous fads and fashions are in fact life-and-death matters. "Good taste" is an index of social connections, of reproductive fitness, of one's ability to mobilize resources -- and in a society increasingly dependent on information and services rather than physical products, the race to remain on the cutting edge becomes like traveling with the Red Queen, faster and faster just to stay in place. Along the way, Douglas throws out a number of gems which are incidental to her argument, including a proposal for why women's work is always and everywhere valued less than men's. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in what anthropologists can tell us about the deep logics of behavior in the consumer society.

An excellent discussion of consumption and culture.
By Gregory L Dyas
Written in 1979 and revised recently in 1996, Douglas and Isherwood's classic breaks through our own love/hate relationship with consumption and the biased interpretations of history and the present to look in a reasoned fashion at the patterns with which all people choose to buy things and the affiliations we create using these things. Lamenting the fact that economics has restricted itself by limiting human tastes to a black-box phenomenon, Douglas (a renowned, now retired, anthropologist) rips open the box and finds many convincing arguments for the uses of goods as a means of communication in all societies.
Additionally, they discuss previous and current ideas about why people save, or don't consume, and provide excellent comparative analyses between societies in Great Britain, blacks and whites in the US, the Nuer of the Sudan, and Zimbabwe's Lele people. What the reader comes away with is a deeper understanding of how people use consumption, both consciously and unconsciously, to provide information about themselves, send messages to others, and try to control the flow of culture and information to best benefit themselves and their interests.
The writing, which I have the impression was mostly written by Douglas since I'm familiar with her style from other books, feels a bit cerebral but is extremely lucid and will keep you on your toes with novel interpretations of familiar cultural phenomena.

A Classic
By A Customer
This is one of the early anthropological critiques of neo-classical economics. Many of the ideas expounded here are now being seriously pondered by economists who are attempting to find ways around them. Douglas, who is arguably the best known British anthropologist of her generation, has a particular insight into the way economist think - possibly because her husband is an economist. This makes her uniquely qualifed to provide us with an anthropology of consumption, that does not dismiss economists, as much as show how much they miss by not understanding the cultural dimensions of consumption.

Review
Abridged but not rewritten, the classic tale is decorated with a plethora of very small, comically gothic cartoons that add an air of spooky grotesquerie. An overall color scheme of pale browns and oranges adds a properly autumnal air to Sleepy Hollow's knobby woodlands, and the supporting cast includes nearly as many ghosts, toothy imps and the like as it does human figures. Grimly's not much for verisimilitude - party guests at the Van Tassels include African-Americans, and there's a glimpse of a generic Native American earlier on - but burly "rantipole hero" Brom Bones looks rightly massive next to the exaggeratedly gawky figure of Ichabod Crane. The Headless Horseman not only sports a particularly eerie-looking twig between its shoulders but rides a red-eyed, demonic steed, and in three views on the final page the decayed schoolhouse has a decidedly haunted air. Still, this is not a particularly scary rendition, and because its text is chopped into scattered, easily digestible passages tucked between or inside the panels, it may have more appeal to less-able readers than full versions. A Pleasant Surprise
By S. Marston
I grabbed this for the Kindle since it was free, and like the previous reviewer, I only had a vague idea of the story from various cartoon versions.

I was very pleasantly surprised. I've not read anything else by Washington Irving. The story is simple; the prose is easy to read but in spots is downright beautiful. Some of the scenic descriptions border on poetry. Irving writes with a dry sense of humor; and he has faith in the reader's ability to connect the dots, so he doesn't spell everything out.

It's a short read - in print I guess it would be 30 to 40 pages. One GREAT thing about reading it on Kindle is having the dictionary function, as there were a number of archaic terms with which I was not familiar.

I give it 5 stars for the combination of price and quality of writing. If you'd like some good writing, a peek into America (upstate New York) at the end of the 18th century, and a little wit, go ahead and grab it - especially if it's free!

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
By A Customer
How would you feel if every time you walked outside in the dark, you felt a chill? What if you lived in a town that everyone said was haunted? How would you like it if you were running for your life from a headless horseman? Well that's what the schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane does in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.

To begin with this book will keep you on the edge better than any other book. When Ichabod is alone in the woods at night and starts hearing noises you have no idea what's going to happen to him. From experience my heart was pumping faster than it ever had before while I was reading a book.

Another good reason to read this book is it will hook you in from the very beginning. It was so good that I was anxious to turn the next page and see what was going to happen. I liked the book so much that I finished the it the same day I started it!

The next reason is it can be scary. When Ichobod is in panic as he rides his horse down the road because he is being chased by the headless horseman you don't know if Ichabod will live or die. Even though it may not be that scary in the beginning it gets a lot scarier later on. Besides the book being scary it is also a love story. Ichabod is deeply in love with the beautiful Miss Katrina Van Tassle but unfortunately so is Brom Bones. He is a rough, bold, and strong man that would do anything to get what he wants. In the book he trashes Ichabod's schoolhouse because he caught him talking to Katrina. That still doesn't stop Ichabod from trying to get the one he believes is his one true love.

Out of all the books that I have ever read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has hooked me in faster than any other. If you like scary/mystery books this would be the book for you. Although it is a cool book I recommend it to kids 8 years of age and older because of the scary and suspenseful moments the book has in it. So next time you are at the library and want a good book, get The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Then you can get chills in the dark, too!

Enjoyable
By Mom in Hooville
This version of Irving's tale is designed for younger children. The illustrations are lovely--not scary at all. I do think, however, that the text is a little long for a 4 year old to sit through, especially since some of the vocabulary and sentence structure is a bit advanced. I'd say this was appropriate for 6 and up.

Sustainability Science, by Bert J. M. de Vries

Sustainable development is becoming the guiding principle for the twenty-first century. This textbook - based on the author's course and rigorously class-tested by his students - provides an introduction into patterns of past and present (un)sustainable development and into the emergence of the notion of sustainable development. It systematically surveys the key concepts, models and findings of the various scientific disciplines with respect to the major sustainability issues: energy, nature, agro-food and resource systems, and economic growth. System analysis and modelling is introduced and used as an integrating tool. Stories and worldviews are used to connect the quantitative and the qualitative and to offer the reader an understanding of relevant trends and events in context. Sustainability Science is an ideal textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in sustainable development and in environmental and resource science and policy.

Review
"Achieving some sort of sustainability will be THE focus of global societies in the 21st century. To be successful, our leaders will need a perspective of centuries, the full breadth of scientific insights, system thinking skills, great cultural sensitivity, and an awareness of spiritual values. All of these are offered in this wonderful, unique text, which will be useful for decades." - Dennis Meadows, co-author of The Limits to Growth

"This textbook is one of the first truly all-encompassing introductions to sustainability science. It is methodical, clearly written and well-illustrated, truly a pleasure to handle and to read. It sets a standard for the discipline and solidly educates the generation of students that will most directly have to deal with the challenges of creating a sustainable Earth system." - Sander van der Leeuw, Dean, School of Sustainability, Arizona State University

"In this important new book Bert de Vries has adopted a systems approach to examining all the issues that collectively amount to the determinants of sustainability. It is an excellent, comprehensive and up-to-date text dealing with not only the underlying biophysical science but also human behaviour. His use of interesting examples throughout makes it both instructive and enjoyable to read. I highly recommended it." - Brian Walker, CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences, Australia

"Bert de Vries Sustainability Science is particularly welcome as it breaks ground in a new field, which so far lacks a proper systematic treatment. No wonder! The challenge is overwhelming: the book covers a series of disciplines and fields - geography, social and economic sciences, physics, chemistry, and biology - using a systems description and system dynamics as the main tool. De Vries not only succeeds in this overwhelming task but spices up the text with multiple excursions into history, philosophy, literature, not to forget the key issue of ethics. Justice and how we would like a future world to look like is always present. Bert's book is impressive, rich and inspiring." - Lars Rydn, Centre for Sustainable Development, Uppsala University

Deep, comprehensive, and multifacetic guide to sustainability
By Secluded Path
This is a very comprehensive, well written and exhaustively researched book on the scientific basis of sustainability. The material is extremely well presented and content is superbly rich and deep. The book offers a very wide view where, besides the excellent mandatory chapters on system dynamics, epistemology, energy, history, agriculture, etc, it also offers a unique summary of each chapter from the point of view of four "worldviews", cleverly chosen models to represent the way a large portion of people think. The wonderful manner in which the author managed to present the links between all physical, economical and industrial concerns to cultural theory, and the human dimensions of the problem of sustainability, is sufficient reason to get this book. It really improved the way I think about the subject. The book also contains extensive references to articles, books, databases and websites.

There are a few glitches though, all forgivable but worth a thought for a next edition. Too many typos appear every now and then, possibly more often than I would like to see in a Cambridge book. In table 7.4. CCS (carbon capture and storage) is mentioned but nowhere introduced before, nor the acronym spelled. Also the choice of color schemes in the the color plates is often unhappy, as represented by the world soil map in which the tones are so similar that the map is for all purposes useless.

All in all a 5 star book. Indispensable for students and practitioners of sustainability.

By halina s. brown
Many people agree that sustainability science is a legitimate field of research, teaching, and practice, and that it is interdisciplinary and requires system thinking. Much less agreement exists regarding what body of knowledge and what analytical tools constitute it. The new book by Bert de Vries from Cambridge University Press is a grand effort to define what sustainability science is.
The book has evolved from a course de Vries has taught for many years at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The author is a physicist by training and a highly accomplished expert in dynamic modeling of complex systems. The book has two organizing themes: One is complex system dynamic modeling, which is used throughout the text, both quantitatively and qualitatively (the latter as a conceptualizing device). The second is the assumption that people have very different understandings of sustainability and quality of life, and that this plurality of views needs to be acknowledged in developing sustainability policies. This is a sophisticated text for a demanding course aimed at advanced undergraduate and graduate students who have already mastered basic natural sciences and quantitative skills.
Having a technical model as an organizing theme of a textbook is risky. It can lead one to see the society as basically a complicated machine – an assembly of known causal relationships and scientifically-determined parameters -- moving according to a set of rules and producing predictable outcomes. De Vries avoids this trap by giving a lot of space to the historical accounts of human interactions with nature, by including in each chapter interesting empirical stories, and by emphasizing values and worldviews. Specifically, following the introduction to systems dynamics in chapter 2, chapters 3 and 4 and 5, respectively, focus on the relationship between humans and nature in past civilizations, in the past three hundred years, and in the modern era of environmental movements and sustainable development debate. Chapter 6 draws on the cultural theory to put the scientific analysis in the context of human values and worldviews and to support the book’s opening statement that the concept of sustainable development is essentially “about aspirations of human beings for a good quality of life while respecting the plurality of worldviews.”
Chapters 7 through 13 are the most technical and data driven. In these, the book covers specific domains that are central to the conversation about sustainability: agro-food system, human population dynamics, renewable water resources, and non-renewable resources (energy and minerals). In each case dynamic modeling is a central analytic tool. At the end of each chapter students are presented with what amounts to a jumpstart for a classroom debate about policy alternatives. Several normative statements are made and each is followed with four very different responses by hypothetical individuals, each representing a contrasting worldview. Although these opening statements and responses do not directly follow from the main body of each chapter (which is rather technical) they nevertheless open the door for individual instructors to bridge the scientific analysis with a conversation about policy alternatives.
This is a beautiful and carefully edited book: the graphics are superb and the langue is free of jargon. Each chapter ends with an extensive list of additional readings and websites.
Students completing this course will have analytical tools and fundamental knowledge to understand complex interactions between the natural and social systems, and will be sensitized to the importance of values in policy process. But when I tried to put myself in the place of a graduate who is eager to put this knowledge into action I realized that something is missing. Suppose that this student wants to understand the root causes of our current overuse of the earth’s life support systems? What if she wants to understand why, with so much scientific knowledge and such urgency, governments have taken so little action? Why have the traditional policy approaches—regulations, economic incentives, information disclosure—been used so sparingly, and when they have been used, why have they produced so little progress? What are the main obstacles to a sustainability transition in individual countries and globally? What if, after graduating, this student wants to focus her just-acquired knowledge toward weakening these obstacles? What can he do in the private and professional life to affect future change?
To help students confront these core questions the book would need to be somewhat more normative. For example, economic growth – in my view a principal force behind the huge stress on Earth’s life supporting systems – is discussed in one of the two final chapters (entitled “Toward Sustainable Economy?”) as a theory, not as an ideology (as currently practiced it is more the latter than the former). The book, and the students, would greatly benefit from being exposed to a critique of economic growth from the perspectives of power relations, institutions, consumerism culture and geopolitics. Another conspicuously missing piece is a discussion of renewable energy technologies from through the lenses of science, institutions and human behavior. Topics such as energy returns on energy investments (EROI), rebound effect, and other strengths and limitations of technological interventions in essentially economic problems, would be part of such an additional chapter.
Perhaps the next edition of this excellent but still incomplete textbook will address these topics.
