Albert Einstein: A Biography (Greenwood Biographies), by Alice Calaprice, Trevor Lipscombe

Albert Einstein remains one of most famous scientists in world history. His image is instantly recognizable by even the most scientifically uninformed person―for many people, Einstein personifies genius. But who was Einstein really? What was he like as a person? What did his science actually mean? This fresh biography of Albert Einstein provides students and general readers a concise, accessible introduction to the life and science of this revolutionary man. Underneath his genius, Einstein was an ordinary person, with human frailties and weaknesses, but also with charm, modesty, a wry sense of humor, and idiosyncrasies. Readers will understand why he was named the Person of the Century by Time magazine.

Albert Einstein: A Biography will cover the entire history of this brilliant physicist's life and career, including: his early education, during which he was an excellent student, contrary to what is commonly believed; Einstein's struggles to find an academic position, which led him to work as a clerk at the Swiss patent office during the same period he was formulating his most famous and revolutionary theories; his troubled marriages and family life; Einstein's rise to international fame, and his use of that fame to fight for world peace; and Einstein's major contributions to physics, explained in ways that can be understood by anyone who wishes a fuller understanding of his scientific theories. The book includes a bibliography of secondary works that are useful for further reading, and a timeline of important dates in the life of Einstein.

I am going to give "Albert Einstein a Biography" three out of five stars. The book was informative and interesting, but I felt that could have devolved a little deeper into Einstein's life.
The book was very good at talking about his scientific discoveries. Each of his major theories and accomplishments were reviewed in depth. Personally sometimes I felt like a little too much detail was involved when describing Einstein's theories. During these times I felt the book dragged a little bit.
Thankfully, the biography also covered how those discoveries were received by other scientists and the general public. Even genius needs a little help to be recognized. After Einstein's key 1905 papers were published there was "icy silence". Not until Max Planck wrote an article on relativity did the scientific community take some notice of Einstein. The general public was not far behind the scientific community. Soon Einstein because a star. Even in his older age when he had pretty much stopped making any new contributions, the public still treated him like a celebrity.
One of my favorite parts of the book was when several common myths were debunked about Einstein. For instance Einstein did not flunk any of his classes. I think the myth that Einstein was a poor student is tempting to believe but alas it holds no weight. Math specifically never posed a problem for Einstein. While not all of his teachers liked him he was a very good student and excelled in almost every subject.
Einstein's personal life was the highlight and the biggest downfall in this biography. Einstein may have been a great scientist but his personal life was a bit of a mess. He never met his first born little girl Lieserl. She died of scarlet fever as a toddler. His personal life is fascinating to read about but this book did not go into great depth on how Einstein felt about his own life. The book throws in a few personal statements but there are not many. If the book had used more opinions directly from Einstein, like from letters he had written I think the book would have carried more weight. Biographies do include the authors own personal opinions, but an attempt should be made to take as much away as possible directly from the individual being written about. I believe that is where this biography fell short.
Overall the book was a good read. I would recommend this book to people who want a quick over view about whom Einstein was and his accomplishments. If you are looking for an in-depth look at Einstein another biography would probably be a better choice.

The Incredible Life Story of ALbert Einstein
By MacKay
.This book gives a very thorough detail of Albert Einstein's life from his ideas amounting to his development of the General Theory of Relativity to his difficult family life and his disabilities as a child. It explains many interesting facts and disproves any common misconceptions about Einstein's life. Calaprice and Lipscombe are able to magnify important points in Einstein's life and captivate the reader just through these events. This book also goes into detail describing how Einstein developed each of his theories and explains the ideas that are included in many of them so that any person can comprehend his incredible ideas. This enables the reader to feel they are in Einstein's head exploring the almost inconceivable thoughts of this brilliant scientist. I am sure that both Calaprice and Lipscombe desired to recount Einstein's life because of his varying life status as he became one of the most famous scientists in world history. Einstein's compelling life story is reason enough to read this book. If you have not already become acquainted with Einstein and his discoveries, I would highly recommend that you take time and get informed by reading one of his biographies. Einstein had an incredible life that is thoroughly summed up in Albert Einstein: A Biography by Alice Calaprice and Trevor Lipscombe.

The Genius of Albert Einstein
By Jake B. Applegarth
Albert Einstein is one of the most brilliant minds that has ever lived here in this earth and is considered by most to be the most intelligent man to have ever lived. He has made so many great contributions to science and math that greatly affect the way that we view the universe today. In the book "Albert Einstein, a Biography" written by Alice Calaprice and Trevor Lipscombe, it gives us a greater insight not only at his life in the sciences and mathematics, but in his personal life as well. We can get inside the mind of one of the greatest geniuses of our times by reading this great attention grabber.
This book first begins with the earlier years of Albert's family and the difficulties that they faced growing up during difficult times in Munich. When young Albert was first going through school, his teaches didn't ever see the genius in him. They were concerned that he actually had difficulties learning and that he would never amount to much. It continues explaining his upbringing and his accomplishments during his incredible life where he was able to prove the Pythagorean Theorem by himself, explain molecular dimensions, and make significant contributions to end World War II with the finalization of the "Manhattan Project." During his "year of miracles," he published some of the most amazing scientific papers that truly showed his genius to the world and covered his molecular-kinetic heat theory as well as his special theory of relativity. Apart from all of his scholarly acts, he was a very amusing human being. To those that were close around him would tell of his heighten sense of humor and his great sarcasm that he possessed. He truly is an icon that many look to in order to create and invent the concepts and mechanisms we have in our modern world that make our lives so great.
This book is very well written and keeps you interested in learning about topics that at the first glance are difficult to understand, but the writers help all learn about this extraordinary man. The transitions throughout the book help make for an easy read and the book ends before you know it. Such a good book that it makes it difficult to put down. It receives five stars from me and I will recommend to those that have an interest not only in mathematics and the sciences, but how to explore this wonderful universe in which we live.
