The Craft of Lace Knitting by Barbara G. Walker

I do not own this book, but I did check it out of the library.

This book has many interesting and exciting lace patterns. I am really thrilled to see all of the intricate stitches and can hardly wait to begin. It is definitely worth checking out if you LOVE knitting lace.

Things to think about before purchasing this book:

1. These lace stitch patterns were originally published as part of Barbara G. Walker's, "A Treasury of Knitting Patterns" and "A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns".

2. The original price on the book is $2.95 published in 1971. You can now purchase a used book for $69.+

3. The book is 128 pages long.

4. It's a bit shy, if not completely devoid, of lace edging patterns. This book has primarily lace panel and all-over lace stitch patterns.

Lovely patterns for the experienced knitter

This book is 128 pages of some of the loveliest lace patterns I've seen. The variety is far reaching and the instructions/directions clearly written. There is a glossary at the front of the book clearly explaining the terms used. A clear, black & white picture illustrates each pattern. This is a book for the experienced knitter wishing to add to a collection of patterns. Having been printed in 1971, it comes from a period when all sorts of crafts were very popular. However, this book contains classics that have been around a long time.

The above quote leads off the introduction to Your Best Investment, setting the stage for a book that may turn some Americans’ long-held beliefs about nutrition upside down.

For Life Extension readers, this takes us to a common culprit when it comes to diabetes, obesity, and the metabolic syndrome: insulin resistance. Dr. Lee clearly states that, “Insulin resistance can cause belly fat, dementia, loss of memory, depression, autoimmune disease, strokes, infertility, neurodegenerative brain disease, and - it is directly related to the one thing that will most likely kill you - heart disease.”

There are some fascinating tips and thoughts about “fighting an epidemic battle of the bulge” when it comes to weight loss, including a chapter about food intolerance testing. Dr. Lee talks about how identifying certain food intolerances can be extremely beneficial to people battling obesity. He finds these tests valuable because they measure people’s tolerance to foods that they commonly eat and can control eating. Dr. Lee even cites a study that demonstrated that dieters who failed other low-calorie eating plans found success when they followed meal plans based on their food sensitivity test results.

America is in the midst of an obesity epidemic where everyone is looking for a quick fix. In his second book, Dr. Edwin Lee shows that insulin resistance is the common thread in obesity, resulting in a variety of degenerative diseases. Dr. Lee offers permanent solutions to these health threats by inviting his readers to take charge of their health by changing their habits. These changes in lifestyle are "Your Best Investment."

First, he advises patients to eat "real" food, not the "fast" or processed variety that screams to us from most shelves in the grocery or from nearly every street corner. He debunks the "Food Pyramid," now simplified into "My Plate," and replaces it with a more healthful pyramid whose base consists of daily exercise and weight control and whose peak contains a few refined starches.

Next, he shows the inaccuracy of the Body-Mass Index (BMI) as an indicator of overall health. He points out the differences between subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. The former is unsightly and can be liposuctioned away, but the latter, which is not so easily lost, leads to much more serious consequences. Dr. Lee discusses several medical and pharmaceutical methods of dealing with obesity but prefers that his patients take control of their health by exercising, eating well and taking nutritional supplements instead.

The second half of the book is a collection of tasty recipes developed by two nutritionists who understand Dr. Lee's approach. It follows Michael Pollan's guidelines, stated in "The Omnivore's Dilemma": Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much.

The first phase is lower in starches; the second phase adds in more carbohydrates. Yet, these recipes include desserts, soups, salads and dressings as well as vegetable dishes and entrees featuring fish and poultry, so his regimen is both appetizing and realistic. (And yes, there IS chocolate.)

Scattered throughout the book are testimonials by patients for whom Dr. Lee's approach has worked and worked wonders, not only for weight loss but for restoring health and vitality.

So now, you're probably wondering what Dr. Lee has done for me. OK, here's where I can let loose and tell you. Dr. Lee has treated me since 2009 with bio-identical hormones and detox IVs. Both therapies have helped me tremendously and were dealt with in his first book, "Feel Good, Lood Younger."

But the core of my health problems stems from having a "leaky gut." In "Your Best Investment" Dr. Lee discusses the value of the ALCAT test for determining food sensitivities that can cause weight gain or other unhealthy symptoms. This test has been a life-saver for me because it ranks 200 foods and beverages as being safe or causing severe, moderate or mild sensitivity. Some sensitivities I could figure out, but others, I would never know without this test. The results of eating foods I am sensitive to range from weight gain to brain fog to depression to digestive distress. Even though my list of "no-no's" is long, I prefer for the most part to eat my safe foods so I can enjoy life.

At one visit, while discussing my diet with Dr. Lee, I learned that his wife cooks traditional Asian cuisine featuring homemade bone broth and fermented vegetables. These are foods I have learned from my own research that I need to eat to heal my gut. I wish Dr. Lee had included them in his book. But then he's told me that I'm a tough case. Average readers who want to shed some pounds and feel better do not have to go to the lengths I do to combat chronic fatigue syndrome. Nor do they have to eliminate from their diets the wide variety of foods that are contained in many of this book's recipes.

Dr. Lee is brilliant. He reads all the latest research and synthesizes it to treat each of his patients as an individual. If you are looking for better health and tasty recipes, this book combines both in an easy-to-read format with information that most doctors don't know or can't explain in a quick office visit. Buying this book and taking action on its suggestions may well be "Your Best Investment."

LOVE IT!!!

Dr. Lee has done it again with another outstanding book to get us motivated and educated to adopt his methods on diet and exercise to attain optimal health. His books are always well written and easy to understand. I struggled for over 20 years with chronic insomnia, hormonal imbalance (I was post-menopausal before age 40) hypothyroidism and hair loss. After much frustration and seeing doctor after doctor with no beneficial results, a friend suggested I make an appointment with Dr. Lee and read his first book, Feel Good Look Younger, I did all of this reluctantly, but thought I needed to keep searching for help. The search for good health was finally over --I started applying his recommendations and since have turned my life around in many ways-- starting with weight loss, sound sleep, balanced hormones and healthy hair. Dr. Lee's wisdom and well-researched advice is a gift to all that are willing to work at it.
If you want to live a life with maximum vitality, you need to read his important work--you can lengthen and add joy to your life.

I had heard good comments regarding Dr Lee so I thought I would give his book a try. Even though I agree with Dr Lee's philosophies as a whole, and I'm sure he is an awesome Dr, his breakdown became way to complicated. Trying to appease the medical field perhaps? with backup for each of his comments over shadowed the whole aspect of simple good health! I usually fly through a book if its interesting to me, however I have struggled with wanting to just skip over paragraphs at a time because of the detailed medical/chemical explanations of things.

If this book is targeted for other Drs to get them on board with his ideas, then it is written correctly. BUT if it is written for the average citizen trying to understand the connection between what they put in their mouths and the health of their mind and body, then it is way over written.

INTRODUCTION

BOTH AT WORK and at home, success and happiness depend on relating

to others across a chasm of significant differences. If you could figure out

how to bridge the gap between yourself and others, you could make your

life—and theirs—much easier, happier, and more productive. How to do

that is what this book is about.

The differences between people are a major source of friction. For example,

our friend Michelle does everything in a rush. She walks fast,

talks fast, decides fast. And she completes projects in a flurry. As luck

would have it, she’s often teamed with John, who is very deliberate.

John walks slowly, talks slowly, decides slowly. Although these differences

may not seem like a big deal, if they’re not managed well they’re

likely to erode Michelle’s and John’s working relationship. You’ve undoubtedly

seen how differences like these can undermine cooperation,

hamper performance, and add considerable stress to people’s lives.

This book shows how you can manage those kinds of differences in

ways that enhance your relationships, increase your productivity, and add

richness and spice to your life. It’s about making people differences work

for, rather than against, you.

There are three parts to the book:

• Part One: Understanding Yourself and Others

• Part Two: Style Flex: A Key to Improved Relationships

• Part Three: People Styles and Family Relationships

Part One: Understanding Yourself and Others provides a pragmatic

way of understanding the differences between people. Rather than delve

into esoteric psychological theory, it provides a straightforward, practical

explanation of what you need to know to relate more effectively to others.

Chapter 1 notes some of the differences between the four people styles

and how those differences can lead to people problems. Chapter 2 describes

the people styles model and explains how it can help you relate

more effectively to people very different from yourself. Chapter 3 helps

you capture data for identifying your own style. The two dimensions of

behavior that are key to understanding yourself and others are highlighted

in Chapter 4. With this background, Chapter 5 guides you

through an assessment that shows how you come across to other people.

The four people styles are described in Chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 8 depicts

each style’s tendency toward certain strengths and weaknesses.

Chapter 9 describes backup styles—the four dysfunctional and relationship-

straining ways in which people of each style react to excessive stress.

In Chapter 10, you’ll learn how to cope productively both with your own

and with other people’s stressed-out behavior.

Part Two: Style Flex: A Key to Improved Relationships shows how to

create more productive interactions by applying the knowledge of yourself

and others gained in Part One. Chapter 11 introduces you to style

flex, a way of creating common ground with people very different from

yourself. Style flex is the intriguing ability to be true to yourself while

relating to someone else on that person’s wavelength. The four steps involved

in flexing to another person’s style are presented in Chapter 12. In

Chapter 13, you learn how to identify another person’s style. Chapter 14

describes how to use style flex in several special situations. The final chapter

of Part Two describes basic flex—three personal qualities that undergird

style flex.

Parts One and Two are equally applicable to personal and work relationships.

However, the people styles model has some unique and beneficial

applications to personal relationships. So Part Three: People Styles

and Family Relationships discusses applications of the people styles model

to two of these types of personal relationships. Chapter 16, ‘‘The Art of

Loving Someone Very Different from Yourself,’’ shows how to forge an

even better relationship with your domestic partner. In Chapter 17, you’ll

find style-based parenting guidelines that will help you have more enjoyable

relationships with your kids while helping them increase their selfesteem

and develop their unique strengths.

There are four appendices—one for each of the four styles. The appendix

for your style presents specific guidelines on how to flex to persons

of each of the four styles.

Many of the concepts in this book will come not as news but as

reminders. We’re often told that this way of organizing interpersonal data

helps people sharpen insights they’ve already gained from their life experience.

Vital Information for anyone

I read the first edition, this book has information in it that I have not seen in other personality style books. I knew much of the typing of styles but now knowing the Back-up response styles and secondary Back-up styles is vital to dealing with difficult and all people. Now I know how and why they react to my personality type and why they may not be comfortable with what I am saying to them, by noticing their actions and response back-up style.
In sales you often wonder Why people reject you or your product but now I have a clear understanding of how to gain committments from those difficult personalties I used to struggle with because I didn't know they didn't deal well with a certain style I was using.
I also manage an office and I might just send everyone home one day and make them read this book, so they would never again say, "Why does he or she respond that way, when I share my ideas?" Once you begin to understand why people do what they do, you can move so much farther in building stronger relationships. You are no longer surprised by their response or actions and you can change your language and actions to fit their style, knowing how they respond to what is best for them. I had my associates all read this and they finally found out why they were struggling to work with certain people and now they have typed everyone and they have learned how to respect others style.
In sales, you don't worry about clients that don't budge who are amiable or analytical because now you can learn what they want and how they like to be sold. you provide it at the outset vs. many lost sales because they didn't see it my way, however, my way is always the same way. I have finally learned why they act the way they do in response to my sales approach and so now I tailor everything to avoid those issues.
I go back to this book for ideas more than any book I have ever needed for work. It's invaluable.

The use of the book is highly dependent on the ability to profile people.Often the physical behaviour of the person you need to profile is not easily visible and some times contradictory, in the sense that a person may show behaviour which would be both equally assertive and not assertive.

Jo-Ann Shelton is Professor of Classics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is the author of several books and articles on the social and cultural history of Rome in the early imperial period, including Hercules Furens: The Madness of Hercules (1991).

Valuable collection of primary sources

This book was required reading for a Roman Civilization class, but we only read a few selections from it as supplementary evidence for other things we were studying, but since graduation I’ve had the opportunity to read it cover-to-cover and am surprised to find what enjoyable reading the book is on its own. Basically the book is a collection of excerpts from primary sources. In addition to the selections from contemporary writers, the author also includes inscriptions from gravestones and architectural monuments, graffiti, and personal correspondence of ordinary people. Some of the excerpts are funny, but a number of them are surprisingly moving and very disturbing, such as the letter from a soldier on the frontier to his pregnant wife at home. He writes that if she has a boy that she should keep it, but if it is a girl that she should expose it. The reader gets a really good idea of how the Romans thought and what their values were from their own words. The author has provided extensive footnotes, serviceable maps, and a comprehensive bibliography. This book, in tandem with Charles Boren’s ROMAN SOCIETY, provides an excellent foundation for further studies in the culture of Ancient Rome. Highly recommended! Five Stars!

An excellent resource for any student learning about the Romans

An excellent resource for any student learning about the Romans, their customs, as well as history-- with primary quotations and passages attached to every topic covered in this book. I have used this book for numerous courses as well as some major research papers and it has proven its worth! From women, children, slaves, abortion, military, the power of the man in every familial unit, satire, etc- this book covers everything. I highly encourage students to purchase this book.

but if you love those wacky Romans

This was broken down into topics and further broken down into very specific sections on various aspects of Roman life. Some of the information was interesting and engaging, but others were not. Romans aren't really my thing, but if you love those wacky Romans, this might be a good supplemental book.

Two Steamy Stories

The author gives us two stories, the first about a busty girl buying a bikini, with the help from a very capable sales girl. There is some action behind the curtin in the dressing room. The second story is more interesting, about Peaches, home for college summer vacation. She is staying with her girl friend's mom, Gina. And Gina is very busty and lactating. Put the horny Peaches together with Gina, and voila! The action is hot and steamy.
The writing is good, not really great literature, but it does the trick. Very descriptive.
