My new favorite book on search

Managing Gigabytes used to be my favorite book on search, but it is getting quite dated as this point. This new book is by three search gurus, Chris Manning, Prabhakar Raghavan (head of Yahoo Research), and Hinrich Schutze, and the depth of their expertise shows.

This book not only describes how to build a search engine (including crawling, indexing, ranking, classification, and clustering), but also has many of the insights you can only get from lengthy experience using these techniques at large scale.

Definitely my new favorite book on search. If you work in search or just have an interest in the field, it is a great read.

nice book!

Although i'm a newbie in information retrieval field (I'm more of a machine learning, computer vision, timeseries person),
I like the book most for the following two reasons :
(1) detailed explanation into the level of implementation in many cases (data structures//memory size etc..)
(2) good review on practice vs. theory. The authors present diverse attractive theories, and on the other hand, discusses why sometimes just simpler methods are hard to be beaten down by those more complicated methods from their experience in practice.

Not As Expected

I've been wanting this book for a long time and finally bit the bullet and purchased it to help me learn more about Photoshop, Illustrator, and Muse, specifically. The first section I completed (Section 2) was interesting and fun. I learned a few things about InDesign that I didn't know and some things about Illustrator and Photoshop. I moved next to Section 1. I found this section a bit harder to work through. I believe Section 2 was easier to work through because I already use InDesign and know how to get around within the program quite well. While working on Section 1 I began to notice that the lesson plans assume the user has a good understanding of the workspace, tools, and panels of all the programs used in each exercise. There aren't many inline graphics showing tools/icons so if you're not familiar with one, you have to hunt to find it before continuing. The prerequisites don't mention the need to have a general working knowledge of each program.

I also expected the exercises to be more basic. For instance when I began working on Section 3 to learn about Muse it immediately jumped me into a website that was mostly complete in its structure. The first exercises were about working with animations. I wanted to learn about setting up the web pages, site map, etc. In my opinion animations shouldn't be the first thing to teach someone.

Overall, I don't believe the description gives justice to the book, which I think is a great tool for those who are already familiar with the basics of the programs and just want to learn more. For those like me who want more basic techniques, look elsewhere. To give it more perspective, I know Corel programs pretty well, so I'm not new to the terms and concepts, I just need to know the specifics of how to do things in Photoshop and Illustrator. This book failed me in that respect.

I like the Adobe Classroom in a Book series. Who else to explain a product than the people who created it? Some of it is confusing for "newbies" like me, but if I keep trying I eventually get it.

Already Dated, Rather Obsolete Already, Unfortunately

I was dismayed to find how dated the material in this manual is. For example, in a chapter that teaches you about the features of InDesign CC, you are told to use a handful of functions and options that no longer exist in the latest InDesign CC update, whatsoever. It was very frustrating and confusing for me. I regret paying what I did for this book.

This has alot of great info in it and has helped in me writing my final report paper on passive solar greenhouses. The information in the book is from the 70's but it still holds true to this day. It's a shame that it is no longer in print.

This fourth edition of the classic text "A Handbook of Stochastic Methods" has been significantly augmented, thoroughly revised, and restructured to accomodate the new material within a systematic logical framework. This new edition adheres the original aim: "to make available in simple language and deductive form, the many formulae and methods that can be found in the literature on stochastic methods."

A new chapter on the applications of stochastic methods in finance provides an introduction to this field using the same simple kind of language as the other parts of the book. This chapter also includes an introduction to L�vy processes, which have found to be very useful in simulating financial systems where more accuracy is required than is available from simple Brownian motion models. New material is also provided on the approach to the white noise limit, on the applications of Poisson representation methods to population dynamics, and on several other applications of stochastic methods.

::: Update::: Issue fixed by direct Springer replacement!!! Springer kindly sent new copy from U.K. print-shop and now it is perfect. (Original problemnatic print was from Lexington, KY, U.S.A. print-shop.)

Do not buy this book until Springer production fixes the printing machine (Lexington, KY as of June 2012). The print quality is 4th rate! Worst than many special, cheaper region specific edition books. The first, brand new book I received was kindly and quickly replaced by Amazon - great service. However, the low-contrast, highly-pixelated print throughout the book was exactly the same. I got tired of asking for yet another replacement because the problem obviously was/is with the printing machine, not Amazon. I e-mailed Springer about the two successive bad print quaility copies maybe a month ago - no response yet. Springer post-sales service quality = ??? Very, very surprising. (As for the contents - I'm not qualified to make expert comments on the material / presentation / organization - it does look very interesting & well-organized! I have a physics background.)

This book is awesome for learning how to do calculations on stochastic processes. even more important, it's also useful for referencing later when you need to do these calculations in your own projects. There's good reason this book is a classic!

very useful book

Two books on stochastic methods I love most are Gardiner's Stochastic Methods and Van Kampen's stochastic processes
in physics and chemistry. Both books are very informative, but their contents are not identical and even when the same topics
are discussed two authors' expositions are often different, so it would be much more desirable if both books are available at the
same time. In brief, this is a great book by an expert in quantum noise and quantum optics.

I overlooked the page length of this book and was shocked to find that it is not even 1/4" thick. It is more like a pamphlet than a book, and I'm not feeling very happy about having paid $6.95 for it. I haven't read it yet, so will post about the content later.

Republished books (1-3) with slightly different titles (old books taken down). Great read if you don't already have them.

Ok so I bought and read these books (1-3) in November of 2015 so I was excited to see a book 4 and a prequel but when I went to click on the link to the series, it claimed I had none of the books. I looked closer and these books claim a published date of 2017 and make no mention of having been released earlier. I also noticed a slight title change (old books were The Black Mage: First Year, The Black Mage: Apprentice, and The Black Mage: Candidate). Those books are no longer in the system.

So just beware if you think these seem familiar it may be because they are. I guess they got republished and the old ones taken down but this is kind of foul play since it could sucker you into buying books you have already purchased before.

I really loved these books and am super excited though to have a prequel and a book 4. I'm just not happy about the republishing sleight of hand.

Tacky romance, tacked-on action

I suppose I'm not the target market for the book. I was fooled by the summary and the reviews. I'll try and explain why I didn't like it and why you might or might not like it.

The first thing to understand is that this book is focused on romance first, interpersonal drama second, and action a distant third. The second thing to understand is that the romance is almost a parody of YA female-targeted romance. You have the guy with gemstone colored eyes that change color with his moods. You have the girl who's a scrappy tomboy that isn't confident in her looks. The guy is a complete unrelenting bastard but he occasionally shows off a softer side... only when he's alone with the girl. Also, the guy is super-talented with magic. Also, he's a prince.

Although we open with an action scene the action stuff is then firmly pushed to the back burner. This is really exemplified by the end of year test. We have 22 young combat mages competing for five spots. The first part of the competition is a series of one on one duels. A tournament designed to identify the best fighter? Nope, just one fight each. The second part of the competition is an oral examination grilling the candidates on combat scenarios. This happens off screen. To repeat for emphasis: the author yada-yadas her way through half of the test that is at the center of the climax of the book.

If you're looking for a straightforward romance with a sprinkling of magic stuff in the background, this is for you. If you wanted to cheer for an underdog protagonist as she kicks ass and takes names after learning magic, not so much.

A Fun, Magical Read!

I'm an avid reader and I always have a book that I'm reading. I find that I get bored if I read the same genre all the time so I mix it up to give myself a variety and explore other genres to see how I like different books. I've read some fantasy books and I'd like to get into more but it's hard to know which books I will like. I randomly came upon this book and was interested because I'd never heard of it before and I love books about fantasy and magic. I haven't read Game of Thrones (yet), which is suggested to be for a similar audience as this book. I've read the Hunger Games series, Divergent series, Harry Potter series, as well as a few others in the Young Adult fantasy genre, so I figured I'd give this book a shot since I often enjoy reading YA fantasy books.

Ryiah and Alex are fifteen-year-old girl/boy twins who come from a small town in the kingdom of Jerar. They both have a common goal in mind: to be selected as apprentices at the Academy, one of three schools. Ryiah is a fighter and is very ambitious so her goal is to enter the Combat faction, one of the three factions offered by the school. After their arrival at the Academy, Ryiah discovers how competitive Combat is and the lengths some of her fellow classmates will go to to win an apprenticeship. She also finds that she has romantic feelings for an unlikely person.

I liked this book and it kept me entertained during a couple of flights I was on recently. I can't compare it to Game of Thrones but I noticed similarities between this book and parts of Divergent, Hunger Games, Harry Potter, as well as some romance added in. As with a school setting, there is the typical competition, challenge of making friends, keeping up with studies, and teenage romance. I liked Ryiah's determination and refusal to back down and give up, even though she is considered "lowborn" and gets taunted by some of the "highborns."

Overall, I liked this book and am planning to continue on with the series. I like books involving magic and fantasy so this one suits me well. If you are looking for something new to read and enjoy reading about fantasy, regardless of if you are in the young adult category or not, I recommend reading this book. I'm in my mid-30s and really enjoyed it. I feel it is a light, quick read and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

This is a book to read, it has everything you may want to know while you are pregnant! It covers a variety of things from eating, exercise, travel, sex, and how to keep a woman beautiful during the time of pregnancy.
The Jyothi has written the book with care and shown understanding for her readers to let them know they will be ok through ll the aches and pains and joys.

When you call a book The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding, you're pretty much ruling out Oprah's Book Club as potential buyers. (Not that Oprah herself isn't a terrific brand.) This is an audiobook for a narrow demographic: entrepreneurs, top managers, and public-relations directors. Coauthor Al Ries comes off like the eccentric genius that most of these managers keep in a basement office, only listening to when necessary. When he says, "The power of a brand is inversely proportional to its scope," and hectors managers with the idea that "customers want brands that are narrow in scope," you know he's right (he backs himself up with dozens of examples), and you know it's the last thing powerful, expansion-minded businesspeople want to hear. Painful Read and Full of Bad Examples.

What a frustrating read from someone who believes there is more to a Company and its Products than just its brand.

First off... Ignore the entire last half of the book on anything web based (what they call "the Net"). To be fair..the book was written in 2002, a stone-age ago in terms of the Internet, but the narcissistic assumptions made are so far off.... Such as...
-Yahoo is the global leader in search and always will be (Google yet?)
-Amazon is the leader in online book sales, but will fail if they expand outside of books...
-eTrade will fail because of its name alone
-AOL/CompuServe will continue to dominate
-......and the list goes on.

Even for the first half of the book (and a part at the very end), read the suggestions/lessons, but not the examples that say such things as...
-GM/Chev have lost market share, because of their confusing product naming (Ever heard of quality coming into a customer's decision to purchase?!)
-Levi's failed because of branding (not because every other company made their jeans overseas at 10% the cost)
-Apple needs to stick to computers. No one wants to surf the web from their phone, or listen to music from their phone.
-Product always diverge, no one wants convergence (opposite of what a smart phone, table, PC, TV, Xbox is today?)...

In business schools we used to call books like this "airport business books" that sell to people rushing through airports with their flashy covers and catchy titles.

Again, read the first 22 laws, but ignore the examples. The authors wrote their law and then looked to the market to prove their point. Not research based where you have controls, variables and prove results based on research evidence.
Ignore the 11 laws of Internet Branding.
Go in knowing that everything to the authors is black-and-white and only their opinion matters.

I could go on ... but it would violate my law of moving onto better things.

The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding by itself is certainly a worthwhile read and provides a nice outline for important pieces not to lose track of as one builds a brand. On the other hand, the "BONUS" section that includes "The 11 Immutable Laws of Internet Branding" is a complete miss. It is sorely outdated and full of false predictions regarding how the internet would play out. Stick to the 22, but you can save yourself a lot of time by not even bothering with reading the 11 (unless you want a few good laughs).

The first part of this book was really useful, and I was confident about the author's knowledge and insights. The 11 internet branding laws however made me doubt everything I just read.

It is a common problem for experts to think they are also experts in predicting the future I guess, but really...

"The Internet will be the first new medium that will not be dominated by advertising" laughable

"Amazon should stay focused on books and music"

"Yahoo is in no danger because it has a powerful dominant position in the portal category" hear that Google

"The PC, the Internet and TV will combine? It will never happen" LOL

"We won't have our palm pilot, phone and CD in one...Technologies don't converge, they diverge" tell that to my IPhone.

Of course hindsight is 20/20 vision and all that, but like I said the first part of the book is about being able to predict whether your brand will be successful and now I am doubting all that possibly good information
