Review
Winner of the 1993 James R. Wiseman Book Award, Archaeological Institute of America

One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1993

"[This book] is a work of art which, in richness of subject matter and ideas, as well as in its craft of language and imagery, might be considered worthy of Daidalos himself.... [T]his is a marvelous, thought-provoking book ... packed with epigrammatic sentences and memorable one-liners."--Susan Sherratt, Antiquity

"Morris's impressive control of ancient evidence and modern bibliography on archaeology, history, literature, and mythology enables her to produce a persuasive synthesis.... [T]his is a book to be reckoned with by historians as well as art historians and philologists."--Peter Krentz, History

"Morris, using art and literature, myth and iconography, etymology and textual analysis, builds an enviably comprehensive thesis.... Morris' book establishes itself as a leader in the field."--Greece and Rome

"No brief review can do justice to the originality and breadth of this major work of revisionist scholarship. . . . Gathering an imposing array of linguistic, literary, archaeological, and historical sources from around the Mediterranean, the author has demonstrated the profound, appreciative dependence of the Greeks on the Levantine 'East', beginning in the Late Bronze Age."--Choice

From the Back Cover
In a major revisionary approach to ancient Greek culture, Sarah Morris invokes as a paradigm the myths surrounding Daidalos to describe the profound influence of the Near East on Greece's artistic and literary origins. Her broad focus on the Mediterranean world combined with her interdisciplinary approach allows for new insights into a wide range of topics, including the meaning of myth, sculpture, the evolution of the alphabet, Homeric poetics, and Attic drama.

Daidalos and the Origins of Greek Art
By Johan Hellerstedt
I have not had the time yet to read through the whole work. I have glanced trough it all, but I'm just starting to get in to it. I'm pressed by Amazon to give a review so...
So far it is a fascinating read. I am a student of Attic Greek and comparative literature so for me personally this is inspiring. If you wonder about the academic/scientific rigidity of the work I would suggest you read a peer review, jstor.com is a great place to start; do not trust amazon reviewers. That is my suggestion anyway. Again for me this book is a thrill, I love a bit of speculation when it is clearly stated as such, that is science, it is what it sets out to be. Some folks seem to think that what is taught in high school Greek mythology is hard evidenced backed laws of nature kind of facts, clearly this is a popular misconception. At a glance this seems like good academic work, fascinating and inspiring, a joy to read!
