During the Second World War, a b-17 tailgunner had a one-in-four chance of survival during his standard twenty-five-mission tour. Valor, Guts, and Luck is the story of Staff Sergeant Lowell "Slats" Slayton (1923–2013), who beat those odds.
An underprivileged kid from Fargo, North Dakota, Slayton was a high school senior the day the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Drawn to the glamour of the "wild blue yonder" made famous by newsreels, he joined the Army Air Force. Eventually he found himself on an unlucky thirteenth mission to the main fw-190 fighter-aircraft plant in Oschersleben, Germany. After being hit by a rocket, his plane left the protection of the formation and was immediately attacked by a swarm of fighter-aircraft, resulting in damage that forced a crash landing in Germany.
Slayton, though wounded, survived the crash landing and spent time in three hospitals and two pow camps and then endured a 300-plus mile trek from Poland to western Germany during one of the coldest winters on record. Through Slayton’s recollections, William L. Smallwood conveys the riveting tales of life in the Air Corps, aerial combat, and the horrific experiences of a prisoner of war. Through it all, Slayton’s valor, guts, and luck made it possible for him to enjoy a homecoming after the war.

Great read.

William Smallwood's writing style is like taking a comfortable slow walk all downhill. Starting with the crew's 13th mission that has the B17 hit by enemy fire and crash landing into German territory and moving back in time to set the stage for Slats's childhood memories, Smallwood takes the reader for a true WWII adventure good enough for any movie. Born and raised in Buffalo, I knew Slats, everyone did. More than a few times I saw Slats at the Buffalo Golf Course having a Saint Pauli Girl beer. I'd say "why you drinking German beer? Didn't you fight those guys in the war?" "Sure ' Slats would say, 'I even bombed their brewery in Bremen Germany. But they make great beer." I got a kick out of Slats and all the WWII veterans in Buffalo. I only knew the very short readers digest version of his ordeal. I always wanted to get the whole story of Slats being shot down, and making it back after being captured by the Germans. As I read the really hard parts, especially the Black March, I could not imagine myself surviving it. I never cease To be amazed by the stories of my dad's great generation. Slats Slayton was a great American and thanks to this book a lot of readers will get to know him.

A heartwarming story of a child that loved his country and grew up with all the values that we don't see a lot of the time these days.
The family hardly had food for the table as he was growing up so he and his siblings picked up any work they could find to help out. He and two of his brothers enlisted in the service during World War II, and the story tells of his trials of being shot down over Germany and held as a prisoner. Very interesting. A book that is hard to lay down.
