This company who makes this book, Cengage is a fraud.

When you buy this book, it says in page ix, that you get a free complimentary access code to use their website which has a lot of the course materials on in, instead of on CDs that most publishers use. Not one student in my class received a white envelope with access code in it in their book. When we contacted Cengage they refused to supply us with one, but instead wanted us to pay another fortune to buy the access code. They blame Amazon for this problem, but not all the students purchased the book from Amazon. After many contacts with this publisher by students, and my professor, nothing has been resolved.

Avoid

Worst textbook language ever. Unless it is required for a class, avoid at all costs (use "French in Action" or something else). I have a lot of experience learning languages and this is by far the most pointless textbook I have ever encountered. The vocabulary is useless ("ogre"? "Werewolf"? "Wicked stepmother"?), the vocab translations are often inaccurate and some vocab is anachronistic. The grammar summaries at the end are basically OK but incomplete and again sometimes inaccurate in subtle but frustrating ways. The exercises do very little to improve your grammar. Reading selections are interesting but far too short and do not reinforce much from the grammar or the vocabulary sections.
