About the Author
Rita Mulcahy, PMP, was an international expert in project management Tricks of the Trade and best practices with over 15 years and $2.5 billion of hands-on experience. During her career, she directly taught tens of thousands of project managers from around the world, and prepared them to pass the PMP and CAPM exams. Rita spent 7 years as a PMI chapter officer, speaking at PMI Global Congress, Project World, and PMI's International Project Management Symposium to standing room only crowds.

Good, but liked the previous editon style better

I got this based on a number of online recommendations and after looking at a copy of the 2nd edition version. I already have one book that reads more like a text book (and its very good), so part of the reason I got this one was the 2nd ed was more study guide style which is what I wanted (direct, to the point, bullet point type listing of stuff rather than wordy explanations, excercises, etc etc). However they changed it so the 3rd edition is more text book like than study guide style. So I would say that if you don't have any other prep material, this is a good book to get. If you already have other study material, maybe only get this one if you aren't fully satisfied or comfortable with the material you have. I don't know that it would really tell you much different information otherwise, except maybe the first chapter that discusses more about the test, test taking tips, and the viewpoint of PMI so you have a better understanding of their mindset when it comes to PM (again, other good prep materials or classwork may cover alot of this anyways...) If you already have study material then you may be more interested in their exam simulation software.
Also be aware that there have been corrections made to the book, which the publisher has a list of on their site.
Be cautious buying a used version, and make sure you have all the details of the condition it is in. I had to return the one I bought because it wasn't in useable condition (though it was described as being in good condition). It had the study exercises filled in, and a lot of pages cut out, and marked up with so much pen/highlighter it just wasn't even suitably readable. If they don't have these kind of details listed, then I'd contact the seller to ask, or just buy new.

I have this, and used it and the RMC CAPM Test Software (a separate product) to complete my preparation for the CAPM examination. I took about 5 weeks to gradually review everything, and get to the point where I could reliably 93% (including a couple of stupid mistakes per test) on the timed Practice Exams (on the separate software product). The material and test questions in this book are a subset of those provided by the separate software product.
I passed the CAPM Exam (the real one) about 2 hours prior to this posting.
Therefore, I recommend this book.
However.
Not one of the questions provided in either this book or the practice software were on the real exam. Not one.
Many were kind-of close, and the book and practice test software did get me up to speed on the current PMI version. I passed, and that's the point. However, reading the book thoroughly, and brushing up on PMBOK v5 will probably result in a better grade on the test.
The public consensus is, and has been for several years, that the RMC products are among the best, if not the best, and I agree. However, by Question 25, it was clear to me that I had to rely on knowledge of PMI theory, principles, processes, etc. (really, the point of the test) and not on just "prep". Further, some of the terms (which are testable) are likely only in PMBOK.
Again, I recommend this book, because it did and does work. Just be prepared to spend more than a few hours finding answers in PMBOK

A definite asset to help you pass a hard exam

I picked up this book based on the positive reviews and recommendations from friends. Studying for the CAPM was not exactly fun, but this book made it easier, and the practice exams at the end of each chapter were really helpful in summarizing the material. In short, you need to know your ITTOs (inputs, tools, techniques and outputs). I also purchased the supplementary practice exam software to give me a better idea of what an actual exam would look like...and that was especially helpful because it tells you which knowledge areas you need to improve on.
