In this context, knowledge can no longer be thought of as stored in localized structures; instead, it consists of the connections between pairs of units that are distributed throughout the network.

Volume 1 lays the foundations of this exciting theory of parallel distributed processing, while Volume 2 applies it to a number of specific issues in cognitive science and neuroscience, with chapters describing models of aspects of perception, memory, language, and thought.

This two-volume work is now considered a classic in the field. It presents the results of the Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP) group's work in the early 1980s and provides a good overview of the earlier neural network research. The PDP approach (also known as connectionism among other things) is based on the conviction that various aspects of cognitive activity are thought of in terms of massively parallel processing. The first volume starts with the general framework and continues with an analysis of learning mechanisms and various mathematical and computational tools important in the analysis of neural networks. The chapter on backpropagation is written by Rumelhart, Hinton, and Williams, who codiscovered the algorithm in 1986. The second volume is written with a psychological and biological emphasis. It explores the relationship of PDP to various aspects of human cognition. The book is a comprehensive research survey of its time and most of the book's results and methods are still at the foundation of the neural network field.

Rumelhart and McClelland propose that what is stored in memory is not specific facts or events, but rather the relationships between the various aspects of those facts or events as they are encoded in groupings of neuronal cells or patterns of cell activity.

A Historic Milestone: A book for AI and machine learning

Though I believe I am not the first person writing the book review of this historic book, I still feel honored to encourage the new readers to read this one of most important AI research book published in 1986. The book edited by Rumlhart and McClelland was well organized and well written, comprised of a series of independent and interesting topics in neural network researches given by the dedicated authors. The editors themselves are also reputated authors in the connectionist community. The most results in that book never appeared in the past publications and represented the high-quality papers in the state-of-the-art research at that time. Many papers in that book rank the top position of citation rate even today, e.g. the paper about error backpropagation due to Rumelhart, Hinton and Williams. I also got to point out that the importance of the book not only lies in its scientific contribution, but also its philosophical meaning in the AI research (which is somehow influenced by the book 'Perceptrons' by Minsky and Pappert). The successful research results in that book showed people of the potential and new prospect of neural networks in different perspectives. From then on the second connectionist revolution has sprang and lasted today. Nowadays, people still can feel its leading influence by reading it. Upon reading the book again and again, you will always feel inspired at another new way (that is the value of a book!). Try it immediately.
In a word without exaggeration, the importance of this book to connectionist and AI researchers is like the Bible to Christians. Read it, enjoy it, once and again.

Classic and Influential

This book establishes the foundation mathematics and definitions of what are now called "neural networks". In 1986 these guys (on DARPA grants) figured out the basics of what is (in my opinion) the most significant advance in artifical intelligence since the 1960s. The book is a bit dry, as a fully rigorous academic text usually is, but the results speak for themselves - the techniques and approaches described in this book are used all over in some of the most challenging areas of AI - character, speech, and face recognition, surveilance, applicant screening, and so on.

Read it if you believe artifical intelligence is a bunch of hooey - I do, except this stuff.

The classic and still the best book on the fundamentals of distributed computing, neural networks, and biological models for computing. There are lots of good books out there that take a modern approach but this is much more fundamental and inspiring. Clearly written with excellent illustrations I have several copies of this book.

In Jonestown, De Angelis describes the 1978 mass suicide of the followers of Jim Jones and the ill-fated rescue mission to Guyana. Pearl Harbor recounts the "day that will live in infamy" and its aftermath. The illustrations in both volumes are arresting, the footnoting is meticulous, and there are numerous quotes to keep the history immediate and personal. Each book also includes a time line of similar disasters, a glossary, and a bibliography appropriate for students, increasing the book's value as report material. Few books for the age group deal with the disturbing events at Jonestown, and though much is available on Pearl Harbor, De Angelis' account will work for both younger students and older reluctant readers. The subject of the Jonestown Massacre on November 18,1978 can't really be fully addressed in this book which is aimed for middle school students to understand the catastrophic events that stole the lives of almost 300 children among the 918 bodies lying and decomposing under the merciless jungle sun in a South American country known as Guyana who is forever associated with Jonestown despite it's efforts to escape the notoriety.

Anyway, this book has pictures and is very brief in writing regarding the tragedy. It's really a summary of what happened to those who perished on that fateful day. I wished that the book was a little more in depth and would have listed the names of those lost forever. But it's not that kind of book, this book is to help a younger audience to understand the events of November 18,1978. No matter how many books I read about Jonestown, I'm still trying to understand it.

Tragic End of a Cult, Happy end for my English Grade

I would highly recommend this book for any ages, as I just recently found it extremely helpful as a reference for my disaster report in English. Thanks to this book, I got an A- on my project and oral speech. It's content is elaborate and precise, but also very intriguing. The story of this massacre is so horrible, You can't but it down until you find out everything that happened, even if the middle is a bit dry. I may not have purchased this book having read it in the library, but overall, I do recommend this book for any age school student, and adults as well.

The Real and tragic Story

I guess the real story of what actually happened in Jonestown was written by a young woman who escaped from the compound and blew the whistle on Jim Jones and his grizley plan. It is just as suitable for teens as adults and ought to be required reading.

Debra Layton's book SEDUCTIVE POISON is a well written, thoroughly gripping first hand account of Life and Death in the People's Temple Cult. When I finished reading it I finally had a sense of how and why so many young idealists lost their lives.

I highly recommend for ALL AGE GROUPS

Lots of Good, Common Sense Ideas that Will Save You $$

A lot of the material in this book is not rocket science, to me most of it is common sense, but I'm fairly certain you will find several gems in this guide that (a) you didn't know about it or didn't realize it, or (b) you may have known about it, but either didn't remember to use the tip in your walk of life. The author gets a tip of the hat from me for compiling the list together, as reading through it made me think a little bit about how I spend my cash - the ironic thing to me is I read this book while on a plane to Las Vegas where I certainly was able to put some of the action items into motion!

One thing I do like about this book is for the majority of the tips, if you sit back and quantify for example to order or not a $1.99 soft drink or iced tea with your lunch each work day - while $1.99 (plus tax) may not seem that much at the time, if you cut that out and ordered water you would save about $475 or more in one year alone. That's real money. Combine just one or two other tips from this book and you could save $1,000 in a year easily.

I see from some reviews there are some dings for bad formatting of the Kindle version. It's not 100% perfect, but it's not a bunch of glaring errors that annoy me. I originally picked this up for free during a Kindle promotion and as a I type this review I see it is still free: get it now while you can, but even if the author starts charging a few bucks for it I believe it would be well worth it and pay for itself if you just implement one of the ideas from this book.

I like the author's presentation and ideas

Excellent Advice - Frugality for a Brighter Future

With so many of us struggling to make it from paycheck to paycheck, a book about how to save some money is very welcome. I clip coupons weekly and have a good general idea of my needs and wants. However this book gave me many more ideas I could implement immediately. I found this book to contain lots of practical wisdom. This book will teach you how to pay off loans faster, how to save money around the house by doing some of your own chores and how to save money at the grocery store by shopping once a week. A lot of us spend more on impulse purchases if we go more often! I use a lot of the ideas in this book on a daily basis like drinking water instead of pop which is full of sugar and more expensive. The only thing I disagreed with in this book was the advice to not get extended warranties. I had one on my treadmill for many years and it saved me a lot of money when repairs needed to be made. So it could be useful to have an extended warranty on something you know is going to last a long time and you are going to use a lot. If you used all the ideas in this book you could save thousands of dollars a year. The sooner you get this book the faster you will start saving lots of money. I'm glad I found this book. The only thing this book didn't mention was that you should get a Kindle and download all the free books you can get. I've noticed my book purchases have declined now that I get so many free Kindle books.
