About the Author

UMRAN S. INAN is Professor of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, where he serves as Director of the Space, Telecommunications, and Radioscience (STAR) Laboratory. He has received the 1998 Stanford University Tau Beta Pi Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and actively conducts research in electromagnetic waves in plasmas, lightning discharges, ionospheric physics, and very low frequency remote sensing. Dr. Inan has served as the Ph.D. thesis advisor for 13 students and is a senior member of IEEE, a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, the American Geophysical Union, the Electromagnetics Academy, and serves as Secretary of U.S. National Committee of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI).

AZIZ S. INAN is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Portland, where he has also served as Department Chairman. A winner of the University's faculty teaching award, he conducts research in electromagnetic wave propagation in conducting and inhomogeneous media. He is a member of Tau Beta Pi and IEEE.

Successful integration of earlier two books...

Integration of authors earlier two books on Engineering Electromagnetics (which did not do transmission and reflections vs arbitrary incident angle) and Electromagnetic Waves (which had general transmission and reflection case, but not electro and magneto statics). If you have the earlier two books, you have just about everything and more that is included in this single volume with the exception of some newer examples. Very nice descriptions of distributed vs lumped components and time delay. Nice examples abound, for example, dielectric waveguides using InGaAs and InP semiconductors and use of forces on capacitor in MEMs, and an introduction to metamaterials. A bit wordy, but generally interesting reading. Gives nice phase plots in addition to magnitude when talking about reflection and transmission, which seems a rarity in most books. Antenna theory not covered at all, which is a bit of a disappointment if one is looking for a complete volume for the undergraduate EE. No numerical or variational methods and nothing on coplanar or microstrip lines. Wish some author somewhere would explain how size of hole in Faraday cage affects shielding effectiveness and include enough of a discussion of variational methods so undergrads would realize that the capacitance of a pair of conductors of an odd shape is always smaller than the capacitance of some known configuration that would enclose them, such as parallel wires enclosing rectangular wires (i.e. how to set useful upper and lower bounds for capacitance, resistance, inductance without detailed calculation) but you still need to find such usefuls facts in Jackson or Collin end of chapter problems.

This masking is a form of passing, though it is not often thought of in that way. By using a technology of passing, a woman might pass temporarily as a non-bleeder, which could help her perform her work duties and not get fired or maintain social engagements like swimming at a summer party and not be marked as having her period. How women use technologies of passing, and the resulting politics of secrecy, are a part of women's history that has remained under wraps.

VERY interesting!!

I've looked EVERYwhere to find a book that deals with the history of feminine hygiene, and this book has it all! I've read many autobiographies of pioneer women, and no mention has been made on this topic. Thanks, Amazon! You truly have everything I want and need! :-D

The Many Shapes and Forms of Advertising

Readily disposable and highly absorbent catamenial devices were a direct result of global war due to the highly efficient wound dressings developed from cellulose wood pulp, "cellucotton" , by the Kimberly-Clark Corporation in the United States during World War One. As this rather interesting book notes women who served as combat nurses during that war adapted such wound dressings for personal use and in correspondence with the manufacturer remarked with positive candor on the suitability of that material for their purpose. This resulted in the well accepted Kotex product not three years after the war and many subsquent competitive products. The book is a rather academic and well researched description of the history, research, and commercial development of both external and internally applied catamenial devices. In addition it delves with considerable detail into the marketing research and advertising methods that effected womens' attitudes toward their menses and their correspondent purchasing habits in a way that continues to this very day. In summary the book really points out how attitudes toward personal hygiene have been nutured by the technical sophistication of a maturing industrial society and how commericalization of products that meet those needs can shape social attitudes. This book presented that issue in a poignant way based on a commercial product that clearly influenced modern industrial society.

Well-written books with horrible durability.

These books are generally well-written and visually appealing.

I have a set of minor complaints about the text, and one major complaint about the physical durability of the books.

First, the text seems to have a tendency to repeat the same example. This would not be an issue if the example code was reused in order to clarify a new point, but it gets slightly annoying when it is simply readdressing a learning topic that was already covered earlier in the text.

Also, if you come from a programming background, these books sometimes leave you with a lot of questions, i.e. they do not provide enough technical details in some passages. However, to be fair the books do target beginners, so this was somewhat expected.

The physical durability of these books is horrible. I'm only halfway through my first pass of the JavaScript/jQuery book, and the binding has already come apart (see pictures). I've been reading these while sitting outside in the sunshine - apparently the glue cannot withstand this. These books are obviously paperbacks, but they should at least last 3+ passes. This physical build quality is very disappointing and forces me to only award this book set 3 stars. Otherwise it would definitely deserve at least 4 stars.

Great reading if you can read it.

I love the writing and style of this set. The information is easy to understand and thorough.

The reason for three stars is a physical one. the book (hardback) is actually hard to read. Many pages have text so light that it is unreadable even under the best reading lamp. This looks like a quality control issue, maybe they ran out of ink. I'm not really sure how many other pages are effected, today I skipped ahead to look at form validation and found pages 574, 575, 578, 579, 582, 583, 586 and 587 of the Java Script book unreadable. See images attached for examples.

I really like these books but...

New review: I got the new copy of the book this week and I couldn't be happier about it. Apart from some minor code errors these books are amazing. Not only the explanations are really organised and easy to follow but the book itself is beautiful.

"My old review: I really love these books, the explanations are super clear and the examples are good but what I find unacceptable is the way the JS&JQ book is falling apart on my first reading (haven't started the other one yet).

I would definitely give this set a 5 star rating if it wasn't for the fact that their binding is horrible."

With limited options, I'll take what I can get.

There are not a lot of options for reasonably priced audio vocabulary tools. At $1.95 this is a bargain and certainly a decent tool. My main complaint is that there isn't enough time between: A. The word and the definition and B. Between the definition and the next word. The author encourages you to use the space between the word and the definition to guess the word, but there is barely time enough to do this. It can also be confusing as to when he is moving on to the next word. Overall, it's a great resource and with better timing, would definitely be worthy of more stars.

Draws sharp distinctions

This book is aimed at drawing distinctions between subjective matters of identity and objective matters of income and beliefs. Each identity is as good as any other, but being poor is worse than being rich. Michaels accuses the left of having lost its focus on objective equality, to the point of glorifying poverty.

Treating poverty as a matter of identity is, according to Michaels, a pernicious strategy for willfully ignoring the problem that increasingly many people are increasingly poor, and have less and less opportunity to move out of poverty. Moreover, by fighting battles of identity -- WalMart and Wall Street women each making some percent less than the men -- we may ignore the fact that all the WalMart workers make a hundredth of what the Wall Street workers make. He does not argue against fighting injustices of identity so much as argue for prioritizing and looking at the problems in perspective.

The book draws sharp distinctions between the kinds of arguments that make sense for identities and those that make sense for wealth and ideology. It is a call to action in addressing "equality of opportunity" for everyone (the American Dream), hand in hand with reducing economic disparity.

This is an important social commentary, clearly and engagingly written, and exposing one of the great hidden weaknesses of politics in the United States. You may or may not be convinced, but reading it will broaden your view and sharpen your perspective.

Saying What Needs To Be Said

The number one thing you need to keep in mind as you read my review is this: politically, I consider myself to be an "Independent" who leans way more to the left than to the right. O.K. Full steam ahead.

This is a topic that has interested me off and on for some time, coming from a background where I've seen the hardcore "diversity" rhetoric being force-fed in college classrooms across the country. You can't so much as throw a stone across a college campus without hitting something tagged with the diversity/multicultural label. It really has gotten to the point of mild insanity. And it is to the author's credit that he was willing to write a book that surely caused him no small amount of discomfort. In today's world, badmouthing "diversity" is akin to dangling a baby over a balcony. Everyone thinks diversity is just dandy... especially "radical" liberals making lots of money and living in fat houses far away from any "real" diversity. I was reminded of one of my professors in graduate school who lived in a fat house in the Berkeley Hills, probably worth over a million dollars (or more). Another professor, talking about him in a very serious tone, called him "a hardcore communist." It struck me as absurd. If he was really a hardcore communist, how could he ever justify his lifestyle of sipping drinks on the sunny patio of his million dollar home while beggars live off of peanuts just a few blocks away!

But this is what academics will try to sell you. And, again to the author's credit, he calls out his colleagues... big time!

If you have any sort of brain that has not been completely zombified by the "diversity" rhetoric being shoved in your face 24/7, you will have to agree with the basic tenets of this book. It is not a masterpiece by any means, but at least someone finally had the guts to just say, "Hey... this is getting pretty ridiculous!"

This is the era of the catch-phrase "diversity" and one can only hope that we start focusing on important issues fairly soon. Now, before you start hating on me... keep in mind my disclaimer at the beginning of the review. I am not some Glenn Beck-loving idiot. I lean more toward the left. I voted for Obama.

But I'm not about to drink the Multicultural Kool-Aid.

I buy the argument; you should buy the book.

Prof. Michaels most persuasive point is that our society has neglected the laudable goal of striving for socio-economic diversity in our institutions in favor of emphasizing other classes of diversity. He relies on strong rhetorical skills to make this, and most of his points. He does not focus on the detailed statistics that would be necessary to convince many professional social scientists, but the prospective audience for this extended op-ed piece is more the general reader, who may be provoked into finding their own numbers to butress their arguments. The writing style is necessarily polemical, and it is likely that all readers will find some things with which to disagree. However, in contrast to other critics of modern implementations of diversity, the present author likely otherwise shares many views with advocates of diversity. Even those who take issue with Michaels' conclusions will find his ideas worth considering. His closest intellectual bedfellow is Thomas Franks, to whom considerable reference is made, along with a host of other timely sources (who may be dated in a few years!). I found the short book easily digestible in two hour-long evening readings.

The Billionaire Daddy is worth a billion smiles!

Lauren is a music teacher who's marching into billionaire Dade Delacourte's life to demand her neice. Lauren, and everyone else, thinks Dade is the baby's bilogical father, but it was his twin brother--his identical twin brother. And everyone at Dade's house thinks Lauren is the new nanny, not realizing she's the baby's aunt and that she wants custody.
No one is quite who they seem to be.
The longer Lauren stays with Dade, the more she realizes he's not the billionaire playboy she thought he was. She discovers that he's a carrying and loving father . . . even worse she discovers that she's falling in love with him.
Despite the hokey title, I adored the story . . . okay, I've yet to read a Roszel book I didn't adore, and this one is no exception!
