Everybody else he knows has parents who actually pay for things, but he has to work at a hamburger restaurant to earn enough for his exam fees. Of course Rodney doesn't take the job too seriously. He would rather spend the time studying, so he devises a plan to make sure there are never any customers to interrupt him. Nobody comes to the hamburger joint where the employee never washes his hands... well, almost nobody. Two days later, when Rodney is being pursued by a ruthless drug trafficker, he barely has time to regret his unsanitary ways. The entire story is a little over 4200 words, or 60 pages. It is written at the level of my Spanish 2 students: mostly in the present tense but with a spattering of advanced grammar when needed. Don't worry about either the grammar or the vocabulary; anything even slightly complicated is translated at the bottom of the page. There is also a complete glossary at the end of the book so that this story is 100% comprehensible to all readers.

About the Author
Mike Peto is a Spanish teacher who teaches his classes through a community storytelling method called TPRS. We don't ever waste our time with grammar worksheets or drilling vocabulary... that is boring! Instead we create, tell and read stories that are compelling and 100% comprehensible. As it turns out, that is how everyone learned their first language: sitting around the camp fire listening to stories. It is also a really efficient way to learn a second, third or fourth language as well. At the age of 44 Mike is starting to learn his fifth language.

This was such a fun book to read

This was such a fun book to read! There is a lot of suspense and plot twists to keep readers motivated. I also love the sense of humor and word play in this book. Advanced students of Spanish should be able to read this book quickly and with ease. For beginning students, there is a very thorough glossary and plenty of definitions, making this book accessible to students at a variety of levels. That polyglots guy is the best!

Your Dogs Will Hate this Book, but You Won't...

If you have and love dogs, this book is going to be painful. Let's get that out of the way right up front. What Kristopher Rufty has done here is tap into that animal lover in all of us, so that even as Jagger becomes the monster mentioned in the book's description, you feel for him. You root for him to snap out of it, even as the situation looks more and more dire.

And that's where he gets you: Rufty allows that hope to build all the way until the book's conclusion. Seeing how sweet Jagger starts off his life makes the knife in your heart twist that much harder and sink that much deeper.

The frightening part? In large measure, this could be happening anywhere right now. The small-town feel makes it feel like you live there, which then makes you want to find the people doing this nearby and let Jagger loose on them. When you're done with the book, if you own dogs, they're going to be annoyed at you: you're going to end up hugging and loving on them until they give you that distinctly doggy look of "what are you doing? Leave me alone..."

Rufty consistently gives you something good to keep you occupied and dig you out of your comfort zone, and Jagger is no exception. If you've never read his work before, this is a wonderful place to start. If you've read his other stuff, grab this one now; you won't be disappointed!

This was an extremely hard book to read . So many feelings. I have owned several dogs myself and I understand how you can merge them into your life. Somehow they can become more a part of your life than even family members. I have heard them called "my baby" by some,so I understand the loss Amy feels. Having owned a Lab/Mastiff mix I know their size is very intimidating , but they are by nature both gentle yet protective breeds. It's more than a little scary to think of one turning into such a killing machine. I believe it was more instinct than actual thought that sends Jagger back in search of Amy. I RECOMMEND this SCARY yet sad story. It can't help but touch or titillating the reader. ENJOY!

Laymon writes a Ketchum novel

After reading a few of his books it is clear that Kristopher Rufty is heavily influenced by Richard Laymon. With Jagger this situation takes an interesting turn; what if Richard Laymon wrote a Jack Ketchum novel?

Like Ketchum's work, Jagger is reality based and the focus is on the characters rather than the plot. There is plenty of bloody violence, but rather than get a visceral thrill from it the reader is concerned for the characters (well, some of them) and doesn't want them to meet a gory end. The tragedy of Jagger, a dog tortured in to madness, is handled well and really tugs at the heartstrings.

It is a cliche to describe a book as "more mature", so I will avoid that by saying Jagger is a departure from the other writings of Mr. Rufty's that I've read. 5 stars, highly recommended.

Simon Jackson

Simon Jackson has been a tinkerer, engineer, problem solver, and solution gatherer ever since his early years. In short, he loves to break things apart, figure out how they work, and them put them back together; usually better than before. He started way back when with his first computer, the Commodore Vic20. It was simple, used a tape deck, and forced you to write programs in basic or assembly language; they were fun times. From there, he progressed through the ZX Spectrum +2 and the joyous days of modern graphics, but still with the 30 minutes load times from a trusty tape deck. Games were his passion even then, which led to many requests for another gaming machine, but Santa brought him an Amstrad 1640, his first PC. From there, his tinkering and building exploded, and that machine ended up being a huge monstrosity with so many add-ons and tweaked fixes. He was Frankenstein, and this PC became his own personal monster crafted from so many parts. Good times. This passion led him down many paths, and he learned to help educate others on the tips and tricks he learned along the way; these skills have equipped him well for the future. Today, he would class himself as a game development generalist. He works with many different frameworks, each time digging down, ripping them apart, and then showing whoever would listen through his blog, videos, and speaking events on how to build awesome frameworks and titles. This has been throughout many generations of C++, MDX, XNA (what a breath of fresh air that was), MonoGame, Unity3D, The Sunburn Gaming Engine, HTML, and a bunch of other proprietary frameworks he did them all. This gives a very balanced view of how to build and manage many different types of multiplatform titles. He didn't stop there as he regularly contributed to the MonoGame project, adding new features and samples, and publishing it on NuGet. He also has several of his own open source projects and actively seeks any new and interesting ones to help with. By day, he is a lowly lead technical architect working in the healthcare industry seeking to improve patients' health and care through better software (a challenge to be sure). By night, he truly soars! Building, tinkering, and educating while trying to push game titles of his own. One day they will pay the bills, but until then, he still leads a double life.

A fantastic book and still compatible with Unity 5.x

I use Unity 5.0.0 and this book was made with Unity 4.3 and 4.6 in mind. Regardless, in a matter of 3 hours, I got through the first 3 chapters of the book, implementing and debugging (any errors and typos that I made) the code and resources given in this book and have had 0 compatibility issues. Everything runs smoothly and I am learning a good bit about how things should work so that whenever I make my own project at the end of this, I will be able to do the file structures and such without any issues. I honestly did not read the full title of this book, so I had no idea that it was based around designing an RPG until after I delved into the book itself. Regardless, I have had ideas in the past for RPG style games that I wanted to make, so this will get me the skills and mindset necessary to create an RPG style game.

It's an OK book, but be prepared to face struggles...

Going through this book now...I'm getting frustrated with it at times...The way the chapters are structured it's hard to tell if the author wants you to do what's written in the section of the book, or just read the section. Also there are about 200 posts to the Errata, so if you do buy the book go to the errata and read through it to get an understanding of where all the screw ups are. The websites that he references to go to where you get your assets has changed their layout, so you'll have a slight headache trying to find what you need, this isn't covered in the Errata I just found out.

Overall, the book contains some useful information, but I voted only a 3 due to the ease of getting through the chapters. It is frustrating, but that comes with any new skill you're trying to learn. The way in which this book is structured makes it even more frustrating at times.

An excellent introductory text to 2D Game Development. The explanations are clear and easy to follow. There are some minor changes that have to be made to the code due to Unity version changes.
If you want to learn how to use Unity for 2d Games, this is the right book to start with.

Exactly the book I wanted for model engines

I have many books on Internal Combustion engines and various other heat engines. I've built a few model sized engines and was surprised by how much easier it was than I thought it would be. After all, the big engine makers have huge teams of designers, engineers, machinists and metallurgists. It had to be hard or at least a very lengthy process or so I and many others thought.
This book does exactly what I and (I know) many of my colleagues needed. It dispels the mythology, it provides plenty of examples, tells you what tools & materials can be used and how to substitute if you don't have a particular thing. I pre-ordered and waited impatiently for it to come. I am so pleased with it.

Yes, there have been a couple of publishing problems which the publishers acknowledge but they do not harm the clear integrity and concise descriptions provided by the author. It is my prediction that if you have not built or designed an Internal Combustion engine, you will rush out and do both once you have this book.

Buy other books by all means, because you will need them for complex or larger engines, however even those are dealt with here.

My hope is that model engine designers & constructors, with the help of this book, readily available computers and model sized machining equipment will produce many new variations on the worlds existing designs.

Go, buy it, add to your collection and start a design now!!! This book will convince you that you can do it and show you how easy it really is.

Like all books on construction subjects, you wish there were even more examples and more details and you wish you could touch the example models. This is a long awaited book. I hope there will be a sequel and very soon.

A very good book for anyone thinking of engineering a minature engine. This book helps you to understand that it is not a difficult task and gives you the confidence to undertake such a project. Lots of colour photos and plenty of diagrams. This book is well written and I am glad I bought it.

What a ripper

Miniature Internal Combustion Engines is as good as I expected. The author combines basic information about ICE engines that would make the book useful for a newcomer (maybe a young adult with an interest in engines) with clear descriptions and instructions for constructing them. That is, it is useful for someone who is a fair way down the track in model engineering. It assumes a reasonable knowledge of workshop practice, but that's fair enough for its target market. It deals with an old fashioned hobby, but doesn't ignore the possubility of using new technology (CAD design and CNC milling). Altogether a great little book that I have found hard to put down.
