Required Text for Class

I was pleased to be able to rent this textbook, which is required for a class I am taking. It is rather expensive to have to purchase a book at full price, especially if you are taking more than one class. It's nice to have the option of renting. The book arrived in good condition, as promised. Interesting content. Recommended to those interested in learning more about leadership and how to develop their own skills in this area.

The book may ne strong and useful, however I desperately need to be able to use a VoiceOver, Text-to-speech or Audio book. I was utterly disappointed that no versions of this book were made compatible with text-to-speech by this publisher.

The arrival of a long-lost absent father forces a Manhattan man to come to terms with an ongoing romantic triangle in Tropper's latest, a funny, sensitive and occasionally over-the-top comic novel that revolves around the calamitous life of 32-year-old Zack King. King's a horrible job as a corporate drone for a supply company is balanced by his impending marriage to Hope, his gorgeous, successful fianc�e. But chaos comes with the arrival of his wacky divorced father, Norm, who left Zack and his two brothers after his wife used graphic pictures of his infidelity as the backdrop for the family Christmas cards. Norm makes himself an unwelcome guest as Zack tries to deal with a potentially devastating health problem and a job crisis that makes him realize how much he hates his life. But the real problem is Zack's growing attraction to Tamara, the beautiful, recently widowed single mother who was married to Zack's friend Rael until a car accident took Rael's life and left Zack alive during an ill-fated road trip to Atlantic City. Viagra-popping Norm becomes increasingly cartoonish as the novel unfolds, and the triangle material is boilerplate, but pithy observations on love, marriage and corporate life give the book a graceful charm. Tropper continues to display a fine feel for romantic comedy in this enjoyable follow-up to The Book of Joe.

Tropper, author of Plan B (2000) and The Book of Joe (2004), offers up the story of Zachary King, a man in his early thirties facing a possible health crisis and major life changes. Zack is engaged to a beautiful woman, Hope, and slogging through his trying job as a middleman when he discovers blood in his urine. He makes a trip to the doctor, and as he waits for the results, he starts to question everything in his life. His job is thankless, and he is in danger of losing a big account because of another's mistake; his perfect fiancee doesn't look nearly as good to him as his best friend's widow, Tamara; and his feckless father, Norm, has dropped back into Zack's life, and for the first time, Zack finds himself inclined to consider letting the man in. As with any great comedy, high jinks ensue, including a hilarious scene where Zack, Norm, and Zack's roommate try to track down Zack's doctor. But the novel is also grounded by the serious issues at its heart: the tragic death of Zack's best friend, Norm's abandonment of his family, and Zack's struggle to do the right thing. By turns funny and moving, Tropper's warm, winning tale will appeal to both male and female readers and may draw comparisons to Nick Hornby and John Scott Shepherd. Kristine Huntley

Really nice insider's story of the circus

"Joining the circus," it turns out, is a lot more realistic than most of us think when say we want to do it - that is if you're already a trained performer, as Barbara is and was! I thought it was going to be more about the circus itself, but it's actually a memoir, so reading about circus life from her very personal perspective gives the reader a truly inside story. Yes, it was a job, but more than that, the circus is a "life" and "family." The circus train is home as they move from venue to venue, and Barbara bothers to explain each venue in pretty good detail; at first I wondered why, but began to see how the differences affected the performers, sometimes working under much more challenging situations than others!
Because the book is a personal memoir as much as a book about being a circus performer, there are intermittent chapters about her other personal life and other dancing gigs. Once I got in the swing of it, I realized that her year in the circus was, indeed, a detour, and one that left her with warm memories.

A Center Ring Triumph

Having toured with a smaller circus as "Smokey the Clown" in a previous life I found "Detour on an Elephant" to be a charming, exciting and extremely accurate telling of life on the road with a big show like Ringling Brothers. I enjoyed Barbara File Marangon's candor in telling of romances on the road, something that happens in every show but is rarely spoken of. She may be pictured riding high on an elephant but she is down to earth when it comes to telling it as it is about the life of a circus performer after the lights go out, the spangles come off and the performers are just regular people doing a dangerous, exciting job. A wonderful book for anyone who wants to go behind the scenes at the circus!

THUMBS UP!

Wow! A friend of mine recommended that I read this and lent me her copy. I'm an artist in this lifetime - but in the next I want to come back as a circus performer which seems equally as interesting and as unconventional a career! I like finding out what different careers are really like (things I'd never thought about doing whatever) and this book provides vivid descriptions of circus life as well as some interesting actual happenings in circus history. And, as a fellow animal lover - I enjoyed reading about the various exotic animals with which she came into contact everyday - and particularly of her close relationship with Peggy the elephant - with whom she performed. I hope she comes out with a sequel and lets us know the paths life has taken her! (A few uncaught typo's - but I forgive a person who seems as talented a writer AS she is a dancer.) Also - loved the cover!

Sussman's Last, Greatest Book

I've been a fan of Paul Sussman since his first book. The Labyrinth of Osiris is his most wonderful swan song. Paul corresponded with me after I wrote reviews of his other books and proved to be a truly amicable guy. I was so busy waiting for this book that I missed the notices of his sudden death at the tender age of 45, last May, from an aneurism. My heart was broken both because of the loss of his gentle, funny nature and his tremendous writing skills.

In Labyrinth of Osiris, he again features my favorite Luxor-denizen, Egyptian Detective Khalifa and his unusual friend, Israeli detective Ben-Roi. The two haven't been in contact much since their last case together but, once again begin concurrent cases in Egypt and Israel that squirm their ways together. As they work through both of their country's unbelievable bureaucracies to help one other, their friendship again blossoms. Their "racist" descriptions of each other are both wind-sucking and show their mutual affection. Khalifa is trying to discover what poisoned the water of a Christian household in Egypt, while Ben-Roi awaits the birth of his first child. Each fights the middle-aged crazies, while trying to understand their own lives and their own losses. Ben-Roi's case involves a famous journalist killed in Jerusalem's Armenian cathedral, while investigating a sex-slave ring, and a creepy international company, which seems above reproach, becomes a sleazy counterpart to be investigated as well. It is amazing what a truly great writer Sussman had become. If only we could look forward to more books by this man who truly transcended the Middle East mess, while adding a context that few of us knowThe Labyrinth of Osiris. Goodbye, Paul, I'll miss you! Thanks for such a great parting gift.

Historical fiction readers-Good reads

This is not for the uneducated. Nor is it just for the college crowd. A great read filled with mystery, religion, politics, and the true foundation of a friendship. If you are not familiar with Hebrew pronunciation (as I am not) or Arabic pronunciation fear not you will get through this book. This book has many turns and outcomes. Please give it a try you will not be disappointed in the end.

Mr Sussman's final book does not disappoint. I enjoyed all of the books he gave the world. the characters become your friends and you cheer them on to the solution of the mystery. I was amazed at the way Mr Sussman brought so many disconnected pieces together at the end of the book. I was sorry to hear of his passing last year, my sympathies to his family.
