Solid & Readable End Times Study

I'm so glad that this book has been released in Kindle format. It is a bit of a classic and it was well worth the $5 that I spent to get this edition.

Wilson provides a level-headed, non-sensationalistic, biblically grounded study of the return of Jesus and the end times. He manages to avoid a lot of the technical jargon -- putting matters into plain enough English. But I never feel like Wilson over-simplifies things.

He takes the end times theme and uses it as a case study to illustrate how to interpret the Bible. Wilson is serious about scripture, recognizing the essential unity of the Bible and its message. But he does not try to reduce it to a formula or a theological system. You won't find any date-setting here or attempts to identify specific current events with apocalyptic imagery.

You will, however, find lots of stories and illustrations. And even though the book was originally released in 1977, it usually does not feel overly dated. I wonder if this might not be because the whole project seems to grow out of pastoral concern for readers rather than an attempt to tap into a hot topic as a means for money or reputation. He wants his readers to be ready. This is why there continues to be an eager audience for Jesus and the End-time.

Based on the Yiddish and German press and unpublished archival material, the first part of this book provides a historical introduction to this fascinating topic. Here the author analyzes such diverse aspects as liberation from concentration camps, cultural and religious life among the Jewish Displaced Persons, antisemitism and philosemitism in post-war Germany, and the complex relationship between East European and German Jews. A second part consists of the fifteen interviews, conducted by Brenner, with witnesses representing the diverse background of the postwar Jewish community. While most of them were camp survivors, others returned from exile or came to Germany as soldiers of the Jewish Brigade or with international Jewish aid organizations. A third part, which covers the development of the Jewish community in Germany from the 1950s until today, concludes the book.

An all-too-brief but informative introduction to German Jewry since 1945, consisting of two essays by Brenner and 15 short autobiographical statements by Jewish communal, religious, and cultural leaders. Brenner (Jewish History and Culture/Univ. of Munich), himself a child of Holocaust survivors, notes that the Jewish community in Germany, which today numbers close to 50,000, has consisted of three streams: Holocaust survivors, overwhelmingly from Eastern Europe, who decided to settle in Germany for a wide variety of personal reasons; German Jews who had fled Nazi Germany and returned following the liberation; and immigrants from Israel and, starting in the mid-1980s, from the USSR. In the immediate post- Holocaust period, the community was so traumatized that a US chaplain described the survivors as ``demoralized beyond the hope of rehabilitation.'' The community also suffered both external neglect--help from American Jewish and other Diaspora organizations was late in coming--and internal divisions. While the returnees tended to be less religiously observant and more assimilated, the Eastern European survivors were largely Orthodox Jews and Yiddish speakers. In time, the two communities learned to work together and reconstituted old or established new Jewish structures in Germany. Brenner's thematic approach to this reconstruction leaves some important areas undercovered, but he does deal succinctly with a great deal of interesting material, including the recurrence of German anti-Semitism and neo-Nazism, the tensions between Yekkes (German Jews) and Ostjuden (Eastern European Jews), and two major intracommunal financial scandals. Brenner reveals a community that demographically has grown surprisingly strong and durable, but that religiously and culturally remains weak, with communal leaders who have only a ``cursory awareness'' of their heritage. A very readable and useful study, written with the engaged sympathy of an insider and the balanced judgments of a fine historian. Beautifully captures the irrepressible spirit of its dashing heroes

The heroes of Sony's popular and beloved action-platforming-armed combat video games Ratchet & Clank now debut in their very own, full-color comic series, published by Wildstorm (also known for their comics set in the World of Warcraft massively multiplayer online RPG universe). Ratchet is, of course, a humble furry Lombax with a spark of technical genius who has saved the galaxy from destruction so many times he desperately needs some peace and quiet. Yet he and his law-abiding droid friend Clank are inevitably pressed into action in issue #1, when a nefarious force that has been making entire planets disappear targets the remote world they've settled on! In issue #2, Ratchet and Clank are locked within an inescapable(?) prison complex, and the cellmate who seems to have taken the most interest in them is a fierce warrior they've clashed with in the past! Who is the mad, brilliant mind seeking to assemble a brand-new galaxy from pieces of Ratchet's galaxy? And what role did the questionably venal and incompetent Captain (now Galactic President) Quark have in starting all this madness? The Ratchet & Clank comics beautifully capture the irrepressible spirit of its dashing heroes, and the ever-so-slightly cartoony feel of the video game's wild and crazy far-flung future universe. Highly recommended, especially for fans of the video games, but also for anyone who loves sci-fi adventure comics that feature dramatic action, but don't necessarily take themselves too seriously.

Nice Little Something for the Fans

This is a nice addition to the series for any Ratchet and Clank fanatics, such as myself. I would recommend to anyone interested enough to give these comics a shot. The art for Ratchet can look a little strange at times, but other than that, the artwork in this comic is fantastic!

Ant�n M. Pazos is Vice-director and Senior Research Scientist at the Instituto de Estudios Gallegos 'Padre Sarmiento' (CSIC), President of the Commission Internationale d’Histoire et d’�tudes du Christianisme (CIHEC). He has coordinated research projects on pilgrimages like DICAM (Historical Dictionary about the Way of St James in Galicia) and 'Women Pilgrims', and is the organizer of the International Colloquia Compostela on pilgrimages. He works particularly on the contemporary religious history of Spain. He was Director of the journal 'Hispania Sacra', co-editor of the 'Archivo Gomá' -13 volumes documenting the Spanish Primate during the Spanish Civil War- and has directed more than a dozen doctoral dissertations and research projects.

Excellent Book on Some Important Issues of Discipleship

There are likely many commands we read throughout the Scriptures that we tend to try and avoid. Not purposely perhaps, but our avoidance seems to fall under the overall category of “Do I really have to obey that one Lord?” The other issue we have with certain statements made in Scripture is quite frankly our ignorance of exactly what Jesus is driving at when he tells us to love our neighbor or that we cannot serve God and mammon. What is mammon anyway? Steve Timmis, in his excellent book I Wish Jesus Hadn’t Said That, explores ten very familiar statements from Jesus that we often either overlook or misunderstand, statements that truly define what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

I will state right up front in this review that this was one of the most challenging books on a personal level I have read all year and I read and reviewed over 150 books in 2014. There are just some books that truly hit home and authors who have the ability to unpack important and fundamental truths of Scripture in a way that quite frankly helps difficult concepts make perfect sense. Timmis throughout this book does just that very thing, namely taking a topic such as loving your neighbor and demonstrating for the reader exactly what Jesus meant by that command. After reading this book, one will have for example complete clarity what it means to love your neighbor, who your neighbor is, and why such a command is so vital to being a disciple of Jesus.

There are certainly more lengthy books available that tackle subjects such as the proper approach to money, how to combat anger, or what it means for the church to have a missional posture. There are texts that will engage the minute details of every passage in Scripture related to why we should forgive those who have wronged us. With that said, I have not read many books that have been able to capture the true underlying message found in Scripture in a compact yet comprehensive manner as has been accomplished by Timmis in this particular book. High praise for sure so let me share a clear example of why I have made such a bold endorsement.

In the chapter titled You Cannot Serve Both God and Money, Timmis drills down to what Jesus meant in Luke 16:13 which states “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Some translations say “You cannot serve both God and mammon” given that term provides a more precise rendering of the original language, namely the word mamōnas which is an Aramaic word. Timmis aptly comments that mammon “seems to have carried with it the idea of “confidence” or something in which to trust. The way Jesus contrasts it with God shows that he sees it as an object of worship. The two compete with each other for our affection and service.” Essentially, Jesus is identifying in Luke 16:13 two things that compete for our love and devotion, that of love for God and worship of Him in all of life or the opposing position of love and devotion for the things of the world. Jesus is noting that one cannot at the same time express complete love and affection for God while having their heart drawn towards love for temporal things. When we are in love with God, we are able to be generous towards others. Furthermore, as Timmis so capably states, “When our hearts are captivated by Jesus and overwhelmed at his abundant generosity towards us, we will give generously.”

As you can see, this is not just an issue of dollar bills. It is an issue that sheds light on a broader spectrum of life, thus revealing who it is we love. When are in love with Jesus and desire to serve Him with all we are, we can then better understand what it means to love our neighbor, to be angry yet not sin, to go into all the world and share the good news of the gospel, and to forgive because we have been so graciously forgiven of our massive debt of sin. Timmis captures all of these issues in this excellent book, noting to the reader the crux of what Jesus is saying to us in these statements and why we should be thankful Jesus said all of these statements.

I highly recommend this book for all believers. Timmis reveals the truthfulness of the subtitle to his book, that of “finding joy in the inconvenience of discipleship.” Is it easy to love our neighbor or to forgive those who have wronged us? Of course not; however, we must, not simply to check a box to portray ourselves are more religious than others, but rather because in being obedient to these commands, we will bring glory to God and in turn will grow closer in love and affection for our Savior.

Excellent Teaching and Learning Book

This book is somewhat difficult reading, especially when considering the things that Jesus has asked us to do in order to live a life in Christ. I am studying this book in a weekly Bible Study and it's interesting that within a group setting there are so many ideas, viewpoints and suggestions from others, reading the same book can come up with. I have learned a lot so far and hope to continue the learning process the rest of my life. Books like this one are a great help into understanding how Jesus wants us to live our lives, and as humans what a challenge that presents to us on a daily basis. I think everyone should read it.
