Written with a solid dose of intrigue, this book has become almost a source book for the subject and anti gravity. The Bell and the Hutchison effect are very interesting.
I'm not sure but I believe this book launched Nick popes career as a solid voice in the black tech and UFO's. fields.
Certainly we shouldn't think we the public are aware of the highest levels of technology that our government holds, and beyond this book there are many things that seem to be hints but sadly, its impossible to be certain.

I do have a cousin who works at rockrtdyene in solid fuel propulsion and one thanksgiving I asked him, what the status of anti gravity was at his place. He replied "thats not my department"

raises some interesting questions

Why did Nick Cook put a career with Jane's at risk to produce a narrative that merges hearsay and innuendo with facts that ends on the conclusion "where there is smoke there is fire!" Hopefully it wasn't for a short-lived UFO series on The History Channel.

History is littered with ideas that came to naught at a point in time because other factors preventing success from being achieved. A prime example of this - related in fact to what Mr. Cook discusses - is the deevlopment of fly-by-wire aircraft control technology that allows inherently unstable deisgns to be flown. In relation to this book, I'll accept that the Germans had some very advanced ideas that were appropriated by the Allies. I'll even accept that some were well ahead of anything being done in the US, UK or USSR.

On the other hand, you have the failure of the German and Japanese nuclear programs...unless you fall into the category of folks who beleive one or the other of them did succeed in developing a viable nuclear weapon during WW2. If you fall into that category, you see this book as a component of the contentions of Joseph Farrell and Henry Stevens that the Germans were technological geniuses who had their ideas usurped. Under those beliefs, it's amzing the Allies won.

And, while Mr. Cook does adhere to a less radical view for the most part - I found his comments on how the so-called black programs are run to be fascinating - his mucking about in the hills of Silesia to find an incomplete cooling tower that is claimed to be a test bed for either a flying saucer or a time travel device leads me back to my initial question: Why did Nick Cook put a career with Jane's at risk?

About the Author
Gary White holds a Ph.D. in Music Composition from Michigan State University. At his retirement in 1994 he was Distinguished Professor of Music at Iowa State University, where he developed and administered the music theory curriculum and established the electronic and computer music studio. For a number of years he was also in charge of music listening courses for the general student at Iowa State. Dr. White is the composer of over fifty published musical compositions and the author of Music First! (a music fundamentals textbook) and Instrumental Arranging (a textbook for orchestration and arranging), both published by McGraw-Hill. He has been awarded the U.C. Berkeley Medal by the University of California at Berkeley, was named a National Arts Associate by Sigma Alpha Iota, and has held a MacDowell Colony Fellowship. His compositions have won many prizes and awards, including the Toon van Balkom Prize and the Shenandoah/Percussion Plus Prize.

David Stuart is Associate Professor of Music at Iowa State University and principal trombonist of the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra. He received his DMA in trombone pedagogy and performance from the University of Iowa and studied at the Akademie fur Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, Austria. Dr. Stuart teaches the low brass studio at Iowa State University, the undergraduate non-major listening course, and a course on the history of rock ’n’ roll. Iowa State named him an Outstanding Teacher at the Introductory Level in 1999. He is currently pursuing research on the influence of Celtic folk music n recent popular music. Dr. Stuart has articles in the International Trombone Association Journal, National Associations of College Wind and Percussion Teachers, The School Muscian, and several publications for the Yamaha Corporation. He is the editor of an Italian baroque chamber music series published by Nova Music, London. Dr. Stuart is a Yamaha performing Artist.

Elyn Aviva is an anthropologist as well as a professional writer and editor. She earned a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Princeton University and a Master of Divinity degree from Iliff School of Theology. She has been a tribal planner for the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas, worked as the editor an international high-technology newsletter, taught religious studies, and publised a book on the Camino de Santiago, a 1000-year-old pilgrimage road across northern Spain. Dr. Aviva has a long-standing interest in comparative religion and has published articles in various national magazines on labyrinths, pilgrimage, sacred sites in Europe, and the reinvention of tradition. She is an avid listener to musics from all parts of the world and enjoys exploring their cultural context.

No soundscape!

Anticipating a lecture on Gregorian chant by Randel, the new president of the University of Chicago, I approached our newly acquired copy of MUSIC IN OUR WORLD through its index. Turning to the indicated pages I saw how Gregorian was discussed in the set of pages overlapping with Hildegard of Bingen. Of course I wanted to hear the contrast between the two musics. Alas! the CD meant to accompany the text was, according to the what we learned from Amazon, NOT YET AVAILABLE. Yet we knew from other sources that the disc had already been produced. Our searches by other routes led always to dead ends. Thus, when attending our president's lecture, I had only the words without any sound in my ears. Curiously, he also offered no samples of the music. Apparently words rather than notes are sufficient for the musical cognoscenti. Would Amazon or the book's publisher please make it EASY for the would-be-customer --who is neither professor nor student of music-- to find the CD meant to accompany the text? Renate Fernandez P.S. I've just learned that what I'm hoping to hear is catalogued as COMPACT DISC SET FOR USE WITH MUSIC IN OUR WORLD by Stuart-White. Again, another curiosity, its authorship is reversed. No matter, I shall soon be able to hear it. I very much like the book's combination of text, illustrations and caption, and boxes. The illustration of textures and melodies on page 113 has me puzzled, however. The absence of words or syllables under the line illustrating Monophonic texture fails to clarify how the line accords or fails to accord with the word. You can see by my comments that there is a potential readership/listenership outside of the circle of pros that is eager to accede simultaneously to MUSIC IN OUR WORLD.

Good with the bad

Good: textbook engages form AND context. Attempts to combine multiplicity of legitimate approaches to music, reflecting postmod. emphasis on culture and function rather than just form, theory and "greats" from Western tradition. Appropriate length for course of likely nonmajors and 100 level.

Bad: sloppy transitions - very choppy, unbalanced shifts between formal components and the situating of those components into a cultural setting. Ex.: Ch. 4: What is the point of discussing meter with Klezmer? Both musical examples are in simple time (duple and quadruple) and don't uniquely demonstrate anything - a Britney Spears song could suffice in this context. Basically, it is a poorly written attempt at getting away from the dated music appreciation model. Maybe it could work with supplemental materials?

Also, $60 bucks for a new copy? It hasn't even been updated to a new edition.

So, looking for a book that isn't obsessed with the Western classical tradition? Start here, but don't settle with this book.

Good encompassing book, good variety of tracks

I used this book for a beginners music class and I was happy the way they explained the basic concepts and how they laid them out by chapter. The tracks involved a good variety of music in the world(duh the title) and had some good tid bits of information concerning history, art, influence etc.
book didn't come with tracks but I still got it for a good price, and more importantly I learned about music and I wasn't bored while doing it(except for the extremely long concertos, sonatas etc.)

This impressive work is a splendid history of the genesis, issuance and aftermath of Lincoln's epoch-making Emancipation Proclamation. Not surprisingly, it focuses on the president, whom Guelzo (whose Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President won the 2000 Lincoln Prize) presents in all his prudent, acute genius. As is well known, the recovery of the Union, not emancipation, was always uppermost in Lincoln's aims. Therefore, he had to convince himself that options other than emancipation-principally treating escaping slaves as contraband of war or compensating slaveholders for their freed slaves-were unworkable and likely to retard Northern victory before concluding that the slaves' emancipation would advance the cause of war as well as end an evil. The history of how Lincoln convinced himself is Guelzo's main subject. The political and legal reasoning behind Lincoln's series of hugely difficult decisions has never been presented so well before nor in such authoritative detail. And rarely has Lincoln's cautious approach seemed, paradoxically, so fit and so bold. His ability both to listen to others and to explain with clarity and eloquence why he had taken the decision he did stands out, as does his firmness of resolve in the face of violent criticism. Analysts as diverse as Frederick Douglass and historian Richard Hofstadter have ardently criticized Lincoln's "passive" attitude toward abolition. These critics frequently point out that the Emancipation Proclamation was, in practical terms, meaningless, since it freed only those slaves in areas under Confederate control and left slaves in the Union border states in bondage. In this fine work of counterrevisionism, history professor Guelzo strives to resurrect the traditional image of Lincoln as the Great Emancipator. Despite Lincoln's frequent assertions that the preservation of the Union was his paramount goal, Guelzo insists that Lincoln was committed to abolition once hostilities commenced. His repudiation of efforts by John Fremont to liberate slaves were merely tactical retreats, according to Guelzo, and when he deemed the moment appropriate, Lincoln struck a mortal blow against the institution. Guelzo marshals considerable evidence to support his views, but this is hardly the final word on the subject. Still, his work is a valuable counterweight to those who too easily dismiss the importance of the document and Lincoln's role in eliminating slavery. Jay Freeman

Important history...excellent insight...wonderfully told!

I tip my hat to Dr. Guelzo for writing this outstanding book about President Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation. This book receives my strongest recommendation.

Misunderstandings of the man and this important document's meaning and effect seem to run rampant. This is due, in no small part, to lackluster scholarship and/or some sort of Kantian absolutism--both which the author briefly refers to in his introduction. Indeed, the introduction is itself something that people who want to understand Lincoln should read. The operative term here: prudence.

The book covers the issuance of the Proclamation and time leading up to it from several angles-militarily, politically, legally, ethically and even theologically. Of course, none of the aforementioned dimensions were so easily divisible, as Guelzo notes. Had Lincoln not taken political and constitutional considerations into account in making military plans, he would have risked serious setbacks to the cause of the Union through a re-election defeat or by an adverse Supreme Court decision rendering him helpless to save the Union.

The Border States were crucial to the survival of the Union and a Congress supporting the war effort was likewise essential. None of these were guaranteed, as Lincoln and his supporters had much work before them to ensure that a nation reluctantly plunged into war would not back out and elect a peace-seeking, compromise Democrat who would ultimately dissolve the Union.

One need hardly mention that it was the Supreme Court that helped plunge the nation into war with the horrendous Dred Scott decision, and that Lincoln also had to be mindful that that same Court could certainly strike down the Proclamation as exceeding the scope of the President's War Powers.

Gulezo conveys the sense of care and caution with which Lincoln promulgated the Proclamation and does so in a gripping fashion. This book is superbly written and is a read worthy of any admirer of America's greatest President.

Places Mr. Lincoln and the Proclamation in their correct political, social and historic contexts. For me, this makes the document the result of an act of moral and political courage.

Well written and researched, this book made it easier for me to understand the 16th President, and to get behind the veil that separates us from him, socially and historically.

Interesting look into a pivotal time. Recommended.

This is a wonderful book. It paints a portrait of a side of Lincoln rarely discussed, Lincoln the cunning politician and master of strategy. Lincoln by careful political and military maneuvering did what the fiery rhetoric of the abolitionists had failed to; free all slaves everywhere.

The majority of Northern whites were not abolitionists and were not willing to fight a war with the South, strictly to free black slaves. Lincoln knew and understood this, and cast the war in terms of preserving the union. However thru a series of gradual, and seemingly unconnected actions, Lincoln set the die for the eventual abolition of slavery and the equality of all people.

Consider Lincoln's decision to accept southern slaves into the union army. This decision could be easily be justified on the grounds of military expediency. It was common practice for one army to seize the property of the opposing side and then to use that property against it's former owner. When the Union overran a Confederate artillery position, they would seize the cannons and use them against the South. What could be more sensible and non controversial than to use seized southern property(slaves) against the south?

However by training and arming recently freed black slaves and clothing them in the uniform of the U.S. Government, Lincoln seriously eroded the thesis of slavery; that blacks were an inferior race deserving only of slavery and not citizenship. When the war was over these black veterans would be another obstacle to a continuation of the previous precarious, legal status of blacks. It was inconceivable that a slave who had joined the Union army and fought for the Union could later be returned to slavery or denied citizenship.

The Emancipation Proclamation was a conditional document issued by Lincoln pursuant to his powers as commander in chief. The proclamation provided that, in six month if the rebellion was still active then all persons held as slaves where the Union was not in power would be freed. Thus the Emancipation Proclamation could be defended as part and parcel of the war effort and not a special effort to free slaves or improve the status of blacks. If the rebels did not lay down their arms and submit to the Union within the generous period of time of six months, their most useful and valuable property, their slaves would be forfeit. After all, what country at war does not seize the property, either public or private of it's enemy. To this day the United States, like most countries has a "Trading with the Enemy Act" which provides for the seizure of the private property of citizens of a foreign country, which the United States is in conflict with.

By making the Emancipation Proclamation a conditional document Lincoln set the stage for the 13th Amendment(which abolished slavery everywhere): had the war ended with the Emancipation Proclamation still in effect all the slaves of the confederacy would have been free, however thousands of slaves in the border states would remain in bondage. This would be an untenable situation, leaving aside the fact that the war had converted many union soldiers into hard core abolitionists, it would re ignite many of the pre civil war problems, like the fugitive slave issue.

This was the genius of Lincoln. Through a series of small and carefully plotted steps he brought the Country and the body politic, to a place where they had not intended to go, but did so in a manner, that few noticed the change in direction, and fewer still objected.

Best history for beginners on the market

I have been using James Banks' Teaching Strategies for Ethnic Studies for teaching intercultural education at the college level for almost a dozen years and have yet to find one better. The first semester when I was preparing to teach the class, I had not yet chosen a book when, leaving our college library one day, I noticed an old edition of Banks' book on the give-away shelf. His name jumped out at me since he was noted in my doctoral studies as the foremost authority in the field at that time.

I read the book over Christmas break just before my course began and was ecstatic to find that such a learned author had compiled chapter histories of ten major ethnic groups in the United States. These are histories that until recent times were never taught in schools. They are eye-openers in ethnic history from the eyes of those who experienced not only the Civil Rights era, but one to two centuries of the history of our country's ethnic groups before that. As a Caucasian, I was extremely impressed with Banks' extensive work, something no one else until his time had attempted to do, especially in one volume. Even after changing texts for two semesters, thinking students might appreciate something different, they begged me to return to an approach that would tell 'the stories' of suppressed peoples in the United States. I returned to Banks and plan to stay with him for the rest of my carrer.

In recent semesters, my students have been creating power points highlighting chapter histories in Banks (He's an excellent resource for that), resulting in some rich discussions that might not have happened otherwise. I have come to the conclusion that most of us don't live long enough to recall or appreciate the struggles of peoples who came before our time, especially those that were, up until now, seldom taught in our institutions. Banks book, especially the chapter histories, helps to fill that gap in our knowledge and lives.

Easy to get into the world of multicultural education

Frankly speaking, this book is easy to understand for a foreigner like me. Banks uses simple words and fluent writing style to sketch the outline of multicultural education. Althought I think it simplifies the content of multicultural education, it's still a good textbook for a person who begins to enter the world of multicultural education.

The most backwards approach to multicultural ed. ever!!!

I have had to use this text for a college course. In reading it, I have been subjected to all sorts of personal prejudices from the authors without any solutions. They have used too many pages voicing their undocumented research in a difficult to read format. The opinions are extreme, with no concrete foundations to back them up. There are constant contradictions in every chapter, sometimes within the same paragraph. This was a waist of college students money!
There must be more substancial reading out their on Multicultural Education.

Best for Green Functions, plus...

Butkov gives the best explanation of Green functions I have ever read.
His treatments of vector spaces and tensors are also among the best I have encountered. The notation can be a little clunky, but you get used to it and he really gets a lot from it.
The examples given are insightful and if you study and understand them, most of the excercises are certainly doable. If you find yourself writing extreme amounts when doing an excercise, then you have missed the point (or a trick -- yes, there are a few, but there are not nearly as many in Jackson, nor are they as insidious as those in Jackson.) If you keep this in mind it will really help with self-study.
There are a few errors, especially in the excercises (worst of all in the hints and given answers). They are not too difficult to spot if you use some common sense and understand the corresponding text. (Don't worry, be happy!)
Once you comprehend Butkov, Jackson (Classical Elect.) is much easier to deal with (on many levels -- Green functions, special functions, vector spaces, et.al.)
Another text which Butkov makes much more accessible is Arfken & Weber.
Note (especially with regard to math texts): it is important to understand the difference between a tutorial/primer and a reference. Butkov is an excellent example of the former. Arfken & Weber is much better when used in the latter sense.

What I have read is good.

I used this book to look for an explanation for what "Green's Functions" are, functions which are used in Electrodynamics and Quantum Mechanics. I found that the famous book by Jackson on Electrodynamics gives very little explanation or motivation about them. Butkov, however, gave a very good explanation, or hueristic description, for what they are, and gave an intuitive feel for them so they became more than just mathematical abstractions. Only then did Butkov go deeper into more mathematical nature of the "beast". It appears that he uses this same style throughout the book, and I would eventually like to go through the whole book. As it is, it is comforting to have the book available, knowing that it will be there to help me if I come across another difficult subject of mathematical physics that a teacher or assigned text doesn't explain very well. This would be a good book for the student of physics to keep around as a resource. I can't give it a 10 since I have only read part of it.

Useful book with illuminating examples

This book is useful that the steps are clear with details. For example, instead of just identifying the mathematical equations and giving the solutions in close form directly, the author tells you how the solutions (Bessel functions, Legendre functions, ..) are obtained by the Frobenius method. I like the fashion of this book rather than that written by Afken. I recommend this book if you not just satisfied by solving a physical problem but also want to know the details.
