Essential reading, though imperfect

The first thing I want to say is this: If you plan on doing regression analysis in your research, stop what you are doing, and read this book first. I think this book represents THE current statement on how we should use regression. For Angrist and Pischke, regression is a technology for summarizing data. If regression is to be used for causal inference, then there is nothing in the specification of the model or the choice of estimator that can ultimately make the causal story persuasive. That is, you don't identify causal effects simply by including "control" variables in your regression. The identification comes from elsewhere---either a real or "quasi" experiment---and the regression is what you use to clean up the imperfections of the experiment and measure effects. Angrist and Pischke have done an enormous service to social science by writing a regression textbook that nonetheless emphasizes the primacy of design. This is a terrific corrective for the "101 flavors of regression" approach of textbooks to date.

Even with this emphasis on design, Angrist and Pischke show us that are a lot of nuances to the way that regressions measure such effects---e.g., in the presence of effect heterogeneity---and that's what this book explores in exquisite detail. It's a hugely important book and a very serious and rigorous treatment, despite it's apparently causal style. They make some claims that may strike some as outrageous---e.g., always using OLS, even for limited dependent variables---but the rigor of their presentation means that the onus is on those who disagree to think harder about why, exactly, they would prefer, say, a more parametric approach.

Nonetheless, it isn't a "5 star" book. It often feels a bit rough-draft-like. The presentation of technical material skips important steps rather haphazardly. I wonder if this was due to bad editing? Hopefully there will be a second edition that cleans up these rough edges, in which case it would be the ideal textbook on regression analysis.

Mixes issues

In their introduction Angrist and Pischke say "empirical research is most valuable when it uses data to answer specific causal questions, as if in a randomized clinical trial". The book aims to teach this approach to students of applied econometrics.

The emphasis on natural experiments and quasi-experiments which the authors espouse has become influential in some sub-areas of econometrics and the authors, particularly Angrist, have played a leading role in this development. However, this approach is not uncontroversial. The Journal of Economic Perspectives has an entire issue (Spring 2010, Vol. 24, No. 2, full text online for public) discussing the pros and cons and you may want to glance through it before buying this book.

Taken on its own terms, the book intermingles four levels of discussion: the philosophical and methodological issues around causality, tips and tricks on how the apply the workhorse models of (micro)econometrics, case studies, and the mathematical properties of models and estimators. This intermingling may be useful for a practitioner trying to see the big picture, but it makes things hard for a beginning student. The problem is compounded by the sketchiness of the mathematical derivations.

If you are starting out in econometrics you may be better served by traditional textbooks with more detailed and linear presentations such as Wooldridge's Introductory Econometrics and Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data.

If your interest is primarily in causal inference, book-length treatments that focus only on that aspect can be found in Judea Pearl's Causality: Models, Reasoning and Inference or Morgan and Winship's Counterfactuals and Causal Inference.

Finally a useful econometrics book...

This is a wonderful book. Despite having taken many courses and read many statistics and econometrics books, I'm sometimes stuck in my own applied problems. Of course, these courses and books taught me how to derive asymptotic theorems or be careful when maximum likelihood fails, but this is not what I really need to know to solve my problems. Now with Angrist and Pischke, I have a book that is truly applied in focus -- one that explains why and how certain empirical strategies are convincing and one that is up-to-date with the latest examples of recent research employing these strategies. Real econometrics applied to real problems. This book should be on every applied economists bookshelf.

Must keep in your hand if you want to learn about Drupal 8

This is a really, really good book for a beginner to an intermediate, stretching to an advanced user. The book covers a broad topic such as how to use, programing, and the other Drupal stuffs (see the TOC). I am a Drupal developer who understands Drupal 7 and now learning a basic programming manner in Drupal 8. I feel this is something like a great Drupal 8 textbook.

Note: First I purchased the "paper" book then Amazon offer for Kindle for a few dollars. Of course I also purchased Kindle version.

Get yourself productive with Drupal 8

The Drupal 8 Development Cookbook is great for a number of different types of readers, including a:
* New D8 site builder who just “wants to get something done” that can’t be done through the GUI
* D7 developer and want to learn how to accomplish things in D8
* D8 developer who wants to round out their understanding with practical solutions
* Newbie to D8!

The strength of this book is the code “recipes” that provide complete code solutions to common (and not so common) tasks that can be quickly implemented and easily modified to meet your needs.

If you’re comfortable with object oriented PHP, Drupal 8, and the new concepts and frameworks that support it, you can easily find the recipes you need, understand how they work, and get productive quickly. If you’re not so comfortable, this book has also got you covered: Chapter 1, “UP AND RUNNING WITH DRUPAL 8” will get you started preparing your environment, installing and running D8, and understanding of common admin tasks you’ll need. Then, as you follow along the code examples you’ll come to understand how it all comes together. Don’t expect deep dives into concepts or theories or “hand holding”, rather you’ll be getting concise real-world solutions.

With Drupal 8, the Drupal community moved from a “not invented here” thinking, eschewing 3rd party technology, to a “proudly found elsewhere” attitude, choosing best of breed technologies with which to build and enhance Drupal 8. This is not only great for Drupal 8 but also easier for new Drupal developers to jump into D8 as it uses many of the same technologies they’re used to, and great for existing Drupal developers to introduce them to these technologies which will make them better developers. Glaman covers Composer, PSR-4, Twig, YAML, and of course Symfony.

Besides covering all the common coding tasks like working with pages, fields, blocks, content types, i18n, entities, etc., this book tackles the trickier aspects of Drupal 8 such as configuration management, plugins, and web services, and makes note of some of the gotchas, and explains where these are likely to be headed as D8 matures.

Finally, the two CLI tools for Drupal, Drush and Drupal Console, are covered. Besides the helpful Drupal management commands, Glaman covers scaffolding code via Console. Given the boilerplate code, directory structure, “mundane” tasks OO, PSR-4 and Symfony require, this is a feature you’re going to want to embrace. Too new to be included in the book, try the “--learning” flag on generate command to “generate a verbose code output” which means you’ll get the scaffold code with plenty of descriptive comments.

I was the technical reviewer for this book as it was being written, and Glaman showed not only a strong proficiency for coding in Drupal 8, but also the “why”, as he’s been following the continued development of Drupal 8 closely.

Very concise. William does a great job. He is extremely knowledgeable about the product and passes it along to the reader.
However, Most of his books are not for beginners but he spells that out in the introduction.

AWESOME![.]

I recently picked this book up at a second-hand store while looking for kids' books. I'd never read this before but I thought it was based on an article/story in a magazine I remember reading in school in 7th grade about the same situation; being "stuck in the first day of school": waking up every day and having to start over again! I don't remember what magazine that was that that story was in; supposedly it was some educational/religious magazine since I was at a Christian school that year, however when I read this book, I discovered this book wasn't what I thought and probably had no connection with the story in the magazine although both were similar.
When I read the first episode in the book about the first day, I was so mad at the main character's buddy Alex for how he treated people, especially poor Ollie, that I was just going to put down the book and not read it anymore but I'm glad I didn't because it gets better and better with every repeat first day of school! I cracked up laughing about the cafeteria's rotten food in spite of myself. That'd be awful but Alex the smart aleck got what he deserved, biting into a burger with rotten meat.
I can't remember the main character's name, but we see him become a stronger person instead of a follower of the bad seed Alex, as he takes Ollie the new kid under his wing and saves his house from a fire, and befriends the new girl Amber; they have a great friendship going on!! The ending was wonderful. I like this book a lot better than that article I said I read in 7th grade that was similar to this story because it had a happy and satisfying ending, whereas the one in the magazine left you hanging on a cliff practically! Very clever story, beautifully written. Kudos to Mr. Strasser, keep up the good work!

Are you looking for a funny book that is exciting and will keep you on the edge of your seat? Well Help, I'm Trapped in the First Day of School is just that. It tells the story of a boy named Jake and how he learns the truth about his new best friend, Alex. After Jake gets stuck in the first day of school with Alex six times in a row, he figures out that Alex isn't quite as funny as he first appeared. Jake learns that there is something he must do about his new best friend in order to stop the first day of school from coming again each day. The most hilarious part about this book was when Alex tries to tell the teacher about a nature wedgie and a Melvin wedgie. One of the most exciting parts is when Jake figures how to get out of the first day of school. I would recommend this book to someone who has a good sense of humor about kids who like to joke around in school.

The book was good not the best but good. It's a fantasy because somebody can't get trapped in a day. It's definitely good, funny and, interesting all at the same time. It would attract a readers that is between the ages of 8 to around 14. Now let me tell you a little about the book.

In the book a kid named Jake is going to be a punk and beat all the little kids on the first day of school because that's what the eighth graders did to him when he was a kid. So God trapped him in the first day of school. During the book he keeps, having to do the first day of school over again because God won't let him out till he does the right thing. That's all I'm going to tell you because I don't want to spoil it for you.

About the Author
Greg Gibson is Professor in the School of Integrative Biology at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and holds adjunct appointments at North Carolina State University and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biology at the University of Sydney and a Ph.D. in Cell Biology at the University of Basel (with Walter J. Gehring). Dr. Gibson serves on the editorial boards of several leading journals, and is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His research is in quantitative genetics and genomics, focusing both on the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, and human variability. Spencer V. Muse is Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics, Bioinformatics Research Center at North Carolina State University. He earned a Bachelor s Degree in Statistics and a Ph.D. in Statistics and Genetics, both at NCSU (the latter with Bruce Weir and Trudy Mackay). Dr. Muse was the recipient of a Sloan Foundation Young Investigator Award (1997 2001). His research is in molecular evolution and bioinformatics.

A very good, updated introduction to genomics

This is an upper level genetics textbook and contains chapters on genome projects, genome sequencing, genomic variation, gene expression, proteomics, and systems biology. There are review questions at the end of the chapters - but that should not imply that this is an elementary textbook. I can only comment on the first four chapters.

Chapter 1 has a somewhat prosaic rundown on the overarching goals of genome sequencing as well as the status of various organisms. There is a interesting section on the history of the competing approaches to the human genome project.

Chapter 2 contains one of the best textbook reviews of BAC and WGSS sequencing techniques I've seen anywhere. Chapter 3, which deals with SNPs is very strong. This is an excellent textbook to get if you are confused about the relationship between QTLs, SNPs, and haplotypes. The authors tie it all together without holding back for fear of overgeneralizing. (e.g. "the vast majority of QTL effects are almost certainly due to as yet unidentified SNPs") You can write a technically correct textbook without explaining things like that but it is no better than a doorstop. I was grateful the authors had the common sense to rise above mere formal pedagogy.

Chapter 4 is very microarray-intensive, which is kind of a shame given how quickly microarrays are disappearing from the scene. RNA-seq is mentioned but it needs to be compared with DGE.

The authors are a geneticist and statistical geneticist and so while very knowledgeable sometimes give the impression of being a bit above the fray with regard current bioinformatic analysis strategies. Because there is no discussion of how short read data is actually processed (hint: it's not with BLAST) the presentation of second and third generation sequencing technology seemed a bit token, but impressive given the time constraints of publishing.

There is room for improvement in the way some topics were discussed in an orthogonal manner but not directly mentioned in the glossary. As I mentioned there is a lot of microarray stuff, a paragraph on CNVs, but the two ideas are not connected via the competitive hybridization technique, which is one of the ways microarrays are still relevant. The terms "methylation" or "epigenetics" are not even in the index even though there is a page on ENCODE.

As I bioinformatics programmer I found this a valuable resource for learning more about population genetics.

Western Romance At It's Best

I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion and a review.

Vanessa Vale has brought us another exciting tale of Western Thrill,Excitement and Romance.
This tale will have you Tantalised and wanting more and more.

Piper Sinclair has not had an easy life what with having no mother to care for her and just a father and two brothers that couldn't care less about her, she longs for a better life.

But when Piper finds herself hauled away and in jail by this handsome bounty hunter in connection with some crimes that her family committed, she thinks that the sheriff's word that she wouldn't be involved should be enough to make this stubborn bounty hunter let her go.

But Wiley Easton isn't going to buy it at all. He's heard time and time again that a woman is involved in this crime spree that has left many people including his own father dead. If the sheriff won't do anything about it then he will just have to wait till the judge arrives. He decides he will just have to keep her captive and butt naked so she can't escape him.

But everything changes when the judge shows up the next morning, he side's with the sheriff and explains to Wiley that Piper wouldn't be involved, and not only that but he is furious to find that Wiley has kept an innocent young lady naked in his hotel room. Because Piper has been so dishonoured, the judge orders Wiley to marry her and to return her honour to where it should be.

This Book is beyond amazing I loved it from the very first page I just new it was going to be a sexy page turner.

Vanessa Vale sure knows how to draw you in to her wonderful worlds she is able to create it gives us the readers an awesome opportunity to live vicariously through her characters.

Wiley is for sure a strong stubborn character he has a good heart deep down and is only doing this because they had killed his father he was seeking the justice he deserved. I loved his stubbornness how he thinks that having a wife wont change anything …. but it sure does and I think it opened his eyes to the real world as well as opening his heart to love.

Piper was my favourite for sore she has a strong nature and a passionate way about her you can tell how loyal she is and how she truly wants a new life with love in it and someone who really cares for her. I adored how she is determined to help Wiley with his case and how she is willing to risk her own life to bring justice for Wiley father and all others that lost relatives or a loved one from this awful woman.

My favourite part of the story is how Wiley awakened Pipers passion and how electric they both are together.

Sweet Justice......Sweet HOTness!

I hate to say this.....but I think this is my favorite Vanessa Vale book to date. Nothing I love better than is a man who thinks he is so smart and then that backfires on him. Mr. Easton, the hot bounty hunter thought he was so smart in finding a way to keep Piper from bolting as his prisoner by keeping her clothes and leaving her in a sheet. All is find and good until the judge shows up and is not pleased that
"Prisoner or not, a woman ca not be treated........so you have given me not choice here execpt to spare Miss Sinclair's virtue......therefore you will marry her."
I love a good shotgun wedding as well....and when the bride is married in a hotel room wearing just a bed sheet things are just getting interesting.
Great read! I would of like to info to what happened to her ranch and if now her new husband was now to get the deed? I loved the thought that they would now start on a new life on his ranch.....but would of liked to have had a few loose ends tied up a bit.

This story has a wonderful plot with interesting twists as the mystery unfolds and criminals are captured and tried. It has a great cast of characters, unique scenes for getting the job done and entertaining dialog. Sometimes what seems like an unfair situation can, in fact, be a blessing in disguise. What appears as a compromising situation of actual innocence, leads to a forced marriage but the circuit judge. This is another wonderfully told western erotica tale from Ms. Vale. Wiley Easton is a bounty hunter, looking for those responsible for the death of several people, including his father. He is after the Sinclair family. Piper Sinclair knows her father and brother are no good, she is sick of their abuse and wishes she could leave, but with their reputation, no one would hire her, she is trapped. When Wiley and his fellow bounty hunters take Piper and her family prisoner, more is captured than fugitives. The sex scenes are steamy hot, the spanking scene is mild.

A Thriller about Intrigue in the Laboratory

This novel is an intellectual thriller, an extremely readable, can't-put-down book about the uses and abuses of pure science.

The novel takes place in a laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts that is peopled by post-docs, all working on finding a cure for cancer. The lab is run by two people, very different in their styles and approach to research methodology. Sandy Glass is an oncologist, the 'voice' of the lab, the jovial fund-raiser who can shmooze anyone and never miss a beat in a conversation. He's looking for a quick winner in the research department. Marion is the chief research scientist. She is shy in public and leaves most of the public relations to Sandy. She understands that research is a long process and there are no quick winners in this game.

The post-docs are varied in personality and commitment. They each have their own projects which they obsess about to varying degrees. Success in their projects means funding and job security. No results means job insecurity and the chance of being let go.

All of a sudden, one of the post-docs gets some quick and amazing results. Sandy wants to milk this for all it's worth. Marion wants to proceed more slowly and be sure that the outcomes can be replicated. The question is: Are the results too good to be true?

The novel goes into the personal lives, motivations and backgrounds of all the key characters. The reader is privy to fascinating character studies along with an anthropological view of the inner workings of a research lab.

The book makes for fascinating reading. It brings up questions about ethics, what constitutes real science, what is a scientist's obligation to truth, and what is truth.

original and truthful novel about the world of science

I liked the idea behind "Intuition", because it was the first novel I have ever encountered, which was so close to my own life and profession. Allegra Goodman managed to find the underappreciated niche and filled it with a remarkable book. The world of academic life sciences is rendered with precision in "Intuition"; it is obvious that the author took her time to really get into the work in the lab in a prestigious institute.

Marion Mendelssohn and Sandy Glass are two co-principal investigators of the lab where several dedicated postdocs and technicians work like crazy to get the groundbreaking results. The novel starts when one of the postdocs, Cliff, is reprimanded for pursuing the experiments with R-7 virus strain, which do not seem to work. Cliff is ordered to work with another postdoc, Robin (who is also his girlfriend), on her project (which also does not work although she has been trying for five years). Behind his back, Sandy and Marion discuss letting Cliff go.

Everything changes when suddenly Cliff's experiments start working and his model mice, which are injected with cancer cells and have developed tumors, after being treated with the virus, go into remission. Everyone is happy and excited, everyone has to help Cliff finish the experiments, Cliff becomes the star of the lab, gives interviews, his results are published in Nature... But Robin suspects that something might be wrong and decides to conduct her own small investigation...
I liked very much the characters in this novel - there are probably all the personality types one can see in the world of science, from the child prodigy, through the meticulous worker, the ironic pessimist, the pursuer of success, to the fame-devouring narcissist. They are from different countries and social backgrounds, which also reflects the real situation.

All the feelings the scientist might feel during the work - frustration, jealousy, tiredness, but also relief, pride and happiness after achieving the goal are also there. The work and living conditions of all levels of scientists are perfectly depicted. The non-so-scientific side of doing science is also introduced: the National Institutes of Health bureaucracy, grant writing, media attention, and, most importantly, scientific integrity, which is the main issue in this novel. There are only two things I am wondering about: how universal this story is, how many people will read it with interest equal to mine, how important the questions discussed really are to the general public; and how soon it will get obsolete - the progress in life sciences is enormously fast so in a few years this book may read like a fossilized record of past endeavors. Anyway, fortunately now postdocs earn more than seventeen thousand dollars a year...

There was enough suspense to keep the reader engrossed, and Goodman made sure that there is enough background to get even to the people who have no clue about science. The ending is very realistic though - I do not want to include a spoiler, but I just have to say that it is very much like life and not much like a novel, which I think is a good thing, but not everyone would probably agree with me.

The cloistered life

In this book, Goodman continues to explore the themes introduced in her first novel Kaaterskill Falls. Both books are set in closed societies that demand total dedication and immersion by their members, and where personal ambition is expected to give way to the service of a higher calling. In the Orthodox Jewish sect at the heart of Kaaterskill Falls, the adherents are seeking closeness with God; in this book, the "higher calling" is the search for scientific truth. Here, Goodman deftly describes the claustrophobic world of the lab, in which the complex relationships among the inhabitants are much more tenuous and fragile than they seem. The delicate balance of this cloistered world remains intact until the researchers come tantalizingly close to greatness, when internal and external pressures blow everything apart.

Although there is much to admire in this book, somehow, for me, it does not live up to its promise. The characters never really come alive for me; they seem to have been created more to serve the Big Ideas at the core of the work instead of being fully formed individuals. And the plot, while clever, is highly schematic and very tightly controlled. It's sort of ironic that Goodman's primary theme -- that the search for purity and perfection cannot survive the messiness of human emotion -- is undermined to some extent by her own need for control.
